Don't think you'll have any problems finding drivers, but download and store them before installing XP, makes it easier to get the laptop going again.

And yes, Vista is pants. We have to deal with it at work (IT support). Absolutely hate it. Reminds me of Windows ME. 98se worked just fine, then they dropped a fancy suit and some bells and whistles onto it and killed it. Same with XP. Works fine, then they turn it into Vista.

Im with you guys on this one, i've lost about 4 days of work, and had to renew all my programs, because nothing works properly with Vista. Some new laptops wont have xp compatable drivers though, as i found out to my cost.

The only good thing I've heard anyone say about Vista is regard the proxy filters at college where all the halls are on wireless internet acess. A friend got vista and found it just completely by passed the proxy automatically, which is very handy as the proxy systems at college is a very poor example, the sort were it prevents you looking work related web pages and the stuff your not ment to look at it lets through unaffected.

My wife bought a Dell laptop running Vista..... against my recommendations (I insisted they installed XP on mine!). Her year old Panasonic camcorder is not recognised and Panasonic didn't have drivers.   I think they have now e-mailed her with drivers that work though.

Right now, I'm sure Vista is fine for those who insist on all the latest software/hardware, but not so great for those of us cheapskates that hang on to old kit until the bitter end

I've just plugged in my cheapo usb-serial converter which used to be a [!Expletive Deleted!] to even make work in XP into my new vista laptop.. i didnt expect much - but I let it search online for the driver and it has only gone and found it and installed it and it says it works!
I'm actually impressed!

go to the manufacturer's websites for each item ie: camera, external drives etc and they should have a downloadable patch for vista software. It's just a matter of time, untill each company produces one.

If you change your computer from Vista to XP, then any drives and or hardware which has a microsoft certification, should not require any new drivers, but this is not a garantee.

Personally I'd just wait till the companies of the products that do not work, produce the required drivers as it's free, and a lot quicker, than reinstalling everything and finding old serial codes.

either way good luck with that.

Windows Vista is the best thing to happen to computers. It is the most stable of all platforms, and there are absolutely no driver/patch issues, as it works first time with everything……………………..God!!! Did I say that out loud!!!!!!!!!!

again, it works with every thing that has a microsoft certificate. if it does not have a microsoft certificate, drivers should come on a CD for XP / vista or would be available from the non-microsoft client web site, or from third parties, who cannot be bothered to wait for someone else to do it. this third party ones are usually unreliable, but get better as time progresses, and re-releases are issued by people who patch the patches in the origional patch. you follow?

in other words vista is good. it just needs time for service pack 2 to arrive and non microsoft companies to start writting for the new scripts vista uses.

easy huh?

I like Vista, and yes some of our laptops are no longer Vista supported (I work for Toshiba) but all can be made to work if you have a non oem copy of XP.
Get a copy of VM ware and run a VM xp inside Vista.

Typical microslop.  New product, under-tested and unsupported with loads of features you never use, designed to make you super duper new PC slow and obsolete as quickly as possible.

How many reported faults has Vista logged to date then?

Working in a computer shop, I go out of my way to persuade our customers NOT to have Vista, as supporting the machines we've sold with it on has been an utter nightmare.
Don't get me wrong, I'm no luddite & I'm all for progress (I'm the biggest gadget freak you'll ever meet) but IMO, Vista sucks.

My Vista machine is now running Linux (with all its drivers installed).

The biggest problem I find with new software is the ton of crud that tries to come with it. My old computer ran well on XP (duron 800 processor) and my current one (1.5 years old) doesn't run as quickly (3.4 Pentuim 4 processor). The differance between the 2 is my brother installed XP on the duron where as some random business computer company built my current one which useually has a 'tray' program run at startup which takes forever :x .

I expect Vista is no better for clogging up the computer with extra software and auto updates that throw a spanner in the works just cos it don't have inernet acess.

We have so far found at least of the well known (ie MS admit to them) XP bugs in Vista and a whole host of new ones that will break certain things for business users.

If you used VPNs then get a client, the MS stuff in vista is badly broke or wait for SP1 (yes there is one in the works) if you rely on a proxy for doing filtering, force the proxy, the autodetect is more broken than XP and the 'Do not proxy for local addresses' still does not work.

Xp does everything I want to do and more, I have no intention of having to replace a £3000+ PC just for pretty graphics.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.
