Changed all the brakes but i still get brake judder

As above i changed all the brakes bar the front discs as they were the same thickness as the new ones and were not warped. 300 miles later and they are still juddering when you brake, not so noticable at everyday driving speeds up to 55-60 but get on the motorway and all hell brakes loose!

Any thoughts as to what this could be? I know my shocks squeek but could this cause the juddering if they are completely knackered?

Hi, shocks that are past their best could certainly cause the symptoms you describe! Not that expensive to try either if you're handy with the spanners.

As said, you need to check everything that can wear. UJ's, steering ball joints, front and rear radius arm bushes.

Do you have MT's....., these can cause these issues to. If you have a mate with standard tyres, swap them over and see what's, what.

how did you check the front discs werent warped. ? .iff you fit new discs you should check run out with a dti guage , but not many people do. its not so much the run out that causes the brake judder its the thickness variation to the disc the run out causes. iff you have checked the disc around 4 or 5 spots round the disc with a micrometer you shouldnt have much variation. cheers alan.......

Thatnks for the responses, i will definately do a thorough check though. One thing that has happend today is my abs light has come on. The plus side is that the juddering is drastically reduced if i hit the anchors. Related or coincidence??

I am pretty sure some bushes are gone though..

Given that ABS is designed to pulse the brakes and what your describing could be seen as pulsing... I'd get the ABS system checked.

I don't know how abs works on a disc but on my other car a sensor picks up a signal from a toothed wheel built into  the hub .this signal has messed up a couple of times causing the symptoms you discribe and I was told by a friend to wire brush the toothed wheel to improve the teeth (rust removal) and to clean the sensor.

sounds like you should check your wheel bearings too.

More llikely you have upset the rear sensors whilst you had the hubs off, also checxk the wheel bearings.  The front senors are insde the front swivels so not change of them getting mucky but very easy to disturb.

As for the juddering I suspect it's those front disks you didn't swap.  Cheap ones have rubbish cast iron in them which isn't homogenous, once you take the surface off it some spots are softer than others so even on a disk that has no run-out they can judder.

If you had sliding callipers I'd say the sliding bush in them, but you don't so it's the disks.

uneven tyre wear can also point you in the right direction, again wear and tear componants such as ball joints, shocks etc.. check callipers are securely fixed, i once had a loose calliper on a nova, felt like i`d lost a wheel! :lol:

Turns out it was the wheel bearings now quite tight enough. That took nearly all of the judder out. Whats left is brake peddle modulation and i think warn panhard bushes.

Still got a dodgy ABs sensor....

And still got no brake lights! Apart from that its all tickety boo!!  :?

Now you have done the bearings you need to clear the fault codes form ther ABS memeory and unfortunately disconnecting the battery doesn't do it.  Look at the article in the workshop about how to do a blink test.  Clear the memory and look for new faults being logged, if any.
