Righty O

In answering this please only bear in mind handling in the wet and the dry, and what tread wear is like. IE how many road miles can i expect before they look crap? Will i be replacing once a year or more than once?

I don't care about noise to be honest just the above.

Thankoo

5000 odd miles to date. Handling is similar to any aggressive tyre - not too scary in wet or dry (quite predictable, actually). Wear has been negligable. I expect to get around 12,000 miles out of them at least (if I don't trash them off road first).

In summary - great in mud and better than I expected on the road. Not great on rocks, though, as the sidewalls aren't as beefy as (say) Simex.

Hmmm, maybe I drive like an idiot on the bends but I've noticed quite a bit of wear in 5000 miles. Probably lost about 7mm off the tread on the fronts. Back ones are ok. Having said that I have had problems with the steering and front bushes so that could explain the premature wear a bit. At the end of the day they are a softish compound that will give good grip but wear a bit quicker. Ya pays yer money...

i have to disagree.
a friend got 50,000 miles outta his, and compared to your 12,000 miles from a special track, i would fork out.
i run bfg mt on mine, and i cant fault em. a blinding tyre, would not even consider anything else....

I can put up with getting 12000 miles out of a tyre as that would only mean changing tyres about once a year if i decided to keep to the ST but in all honesty there'd prob be something different id like out and id be bored in less than 12000 miles, or i might like em loads and keep running with em.

Im just looking for roughly what to expect from running them wear wise and so on and what there road manners are like, but its no good asking a shop as 90% of them are biased towards there profit margins and try and sell you something you don't really want.

Seriously people for what its worth running 2 sets of tyres is not too difficult, bearing in mind that tyres may be good down to 1.6-3mm on the road, but once below about 50% tread then their performance will suffer off road. Why waste off road tyres with lots of road miles?

The only good reason (other than "I'm just lazy") I can think of is if your going to be driving off road every 5 minuets like if you work in forresty etc.

I have thought about the 2 sets of tyres thing myself. Other than them looking daft in the aches its tempting. My AT2's have done a LOT of road miles (1000s) and probobly only 100 or so offroad, seems a waste to wear down tires for offroad on tarmac. not to mention the zook gets tail-happy in the wet with those tires.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

get the insa's keri, they r brilliant, a friends has just hit the 10 thou mark reckon there about 2/3's worn now and the still grip like    offroad

you will find that the will hardly ware at all for the 1st 1000 miles or so but then they will go down faster, pretty much most remoulds are like that, its a hard(ish) compound on the outer tread where its been baked then the lower down it gets softer

2 sets of tyres wise
i used to have some discoverer STT's and i get pig sick of swapping every time id been offroading, so im just running around on my simex as they aint that bad ware wise, they just hit the 6thou mark and theres still 3/4's the tread  left
also i like the hum and there fun to drive in the wet

btw liam if spending the money on stt's....dont...they are like my backside compared to bf muds   , cooper make out they are the dogs when quite simply they aint in the same leauge as bfg's

cost? storage? awkward if you're going away somewhere and want both? even more awkward if you've already packed the back/trailer/roof rack?

theres tons of reasons - its a sensible idea IF you dont stray more than 5 miles from your house. in reality though for a lot of people (like us) theres nothing to buy them with, nothing to buy the extra rims with, nowhere to store them, hassle of moving them if you're going a good distance.... it would get tedious and irritating.

danny - i've looked at both, the main reason i'd go for stt's is because i get sick of seeing bf goodrich on every bloody tyre that rolls past :) to be honest, we'll probably just put the special tracks on anyway... for the sake of 250 quid, who cares. noise? who cares... its noisy anyway. sideways? sounds like fun (ish) and to be fair, id rather be sideways on mud tyres WITHOUT a second set of tyres on the roofrack, rather than be sideways on its side with the second set of tyres all over the road... get my drift?

besides, you'd look like a right knob head if you cruised the quarrys (etc) on 35" simex or similar, and then rolled up to your mates house (in the same land rover of course) on 235/85's ;)

*disclaimer - the above may be exagerated... not that im very bothered

Sorry, should have been a little clearer, for driving to a play&play or greenlane then one weekends wear is not going to be significant so yes use them on the road for that but not the rest of the weak/month/year between offroading sesions.

Yes storage can be a problem for some (not me), correct me if i'm wrong but most houses it would appear have a garage of some sort and we all know these are for storing junk and stuff (extra tyres) rather than the £££££ cars which live outside.

If you know me you would know that I care very little for fancy apperances, I proritise practicality/performance a long way above looking a right knob. Its why I stopped modifying golfs etc. and why I started modefiying range rovers or building kit cars. each to their own.

We don't have a garage here (have a long drive way but that has the landy on a caravan on and a load of other stuff on to) and won't be here much longer anyway as going to other places, so then yes would have room for the tyres to be stored here but thats not much good when im 500miles away lol And if i had a garage big enough id have my landy in it not a load of junk.

The point of this thread was to prioritise practicality while still having what i want and like. I like the insa's so i want the insa's, but thought id find out people opinions on them for road handling in the wet and dry and roughly what i can expect to get out of them mile wise.

I can manage having to change them once a year for £250, and for £250 i wouldn't expect them to last forever. But the only real way to tell is to buy some and see how long they last before i think they look gay!

Everything i put on my landrover is practical for me not for everyone most people will say ugh that will be loud on long jorneys, or that suspension will be to hard, or those seat are not practical as an everyday vehicle. But i can adapt and learn to live with things that i like and after a few days they become practical in my life and i turn to people and say what were you moaning about its not that loud, its not hard, there cool.*

I make my landrover fit in with me and my life, it has everything in it and on it that i want, not i wanted that but got this instead. and so for that i
love it all the more.*

*when i say i and me that stands for us and we (me and liam)
