Why is sanding walls so messy and so tiring.

*cough cough*

Look like the pilsbury dough boy and I have only done half of one of the 4 walls.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

I sympathise its horrible. I tell what makes it better is NOT using a power sander. I really dont think they help remove that much material and for all the noise and worse mess, I reckon hand-sanding is better.

I recently started using the new SandBlaster by Scotch. Bloody excellent little tool. For large areas, get a proper plasterers sander.

My arm would have dropped off by now without my lil sandcritter :)

Basically I'm undoing previous owner/councils handiwork. Anyone that owned an ex council house probobly knows what I'm up against. At some point they have replastered the bedroom walls....

and skirtingboards, doors, ceiling, radiator and sockets. Some class workmanship, like not removing the curtain poles to do it so that I have 3 2" circles where they plastered round it and the finish is just awful. If I had the time money I'd take it back to bricks and start over. Markes from the float all over the place, tons of surface inperfections, drip marks...

If it had have been my house at the time they would have been asked to come back and try again without the chimpanzees.

I also apear to be sneezing whats best described as yellow pollyfiller (walls were yellow)

I know what your up against, the council put in a new kitchen & bathroom 5 month ago & all the paint work in the bathroom has crack or fell off  The kitchen i'm taking back out at the latest next year to refit it properly as the benches are not level & the joiner could'nt cut straight if his life depended on it. The council have said the work was finish to a good standard

My bedroom needs in addition to the plastering: (some I have done)
All electrics redone (no earth sleeving on any connections, one loose connection on a socket, no earth at all on ligtswitch)

New upvc clad windowsill and window surround (no amount of filler is ever gonna make it look right again so I'll clad it)

Varnished floorboards, restripping and varnising to get plaster off

Skiriting sanded right down and repainted/replaced
same for the architraving

same for the doors

same for ceiling finish

annoying but its got to be done, and I'm a perfectionist too.

TBH if it is that bad, it is easier to knock it off and re-plaster properly. A lot quicker and probably not as dear as you think....we just done our spare room, the guy came round fro a couple of hours on the way home from his 'proper' day job and plastered the lot in a few hours, £150 for cash. Would have taken me weeks to do it by sanding or even bodged plastering....

will probobly board it later tbh. need to chase in a lot of cables in the other room too (LAN, Phone, Aerial, 12V power) so that may get one wall borded off the bat.

Might be a daft Idea, but if you have a big cooling fan, try putting it in  a window and sucking the dust outside

Dab & dash

Rip it back to brick; lay the cables etc. then stick plasterboard to the walls using dabs of plaster.
Standard procedure nowadays, very good finish not too expencive and very quick.

Redid mum and dad's living room the same way. May well do the study that way as I dont think any amount of filling is going to rescue the wall.

Not to sound like im telling you to suck eggs but use a filler called easy fill .It's made by gypsum and is great stuff.Good for large areas .You can get it from most good builders mercants[ccf-travis perkins-keyline,etc]

Used polycell, my god what a mess.

But I deeply suspect I could polish that wall till is shines now :) just takes a while to get the knack. As for the effort, yes I can beleive it.

Place bits of semtex on the walls, blow them out and go open plan. Looks nice, no sanding to be done, great fun to do and you will be able to get the 4x4 in the house :D

Cept its a first floor flat, dont think I'd get the zook up the stairs:

A) It doesnt have the clearance
B) the stairs probobly arent strong enough
C) The roof will fall in
D) Rabbit is broken anyhow
E) Its also wedged in the car port as I forgot about the suspention lifting when I got out

My mate did his ex-coucil place with a Hooge DeWalt random orbital, connected to the hoover.  Works well but you do have to empty it a lot.

Err the vax is dead for a similar reason ;)

I think reason I made so much was that I overdid the polycell, just one of these things when you are learning to do something new.
