How is the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in Surrey likely to affect our activities?

Wasnt aware there was one but itll be contained locally with closure of roads/byways, restricted transportation etc.

well i remember well the last one all the lanes shut and footpaths plus all off road actitvites stopped

i expect a quicker response so expect all the lanes to be closed, but its the effect on the rest of the countryside encomony farmers get compo, not so those who see trade disapear overnight who rely on walkers, off roaders staying in the area,.

I heard about out as the first "clients" boooked into there holiday accomadation, will the footpaths be open, they staying in wales, guess where they are from ..... surrey

I lived in Devon during the last outbreak and it was hell.  I saw livelyhoods ripped apart, grown men in tears, businesses bankrupted.

You know what?  I don't care if I can't go off road for the next six months, it is only a hobby, as it is for all the rest of us.  Certain people out there are facing a real threat to everything they own.

Hardly envroinmentely freindly burning otherwise healthy cows!!

If there is another case confirmed over the weekend then you can expect big trouble ahead for the countryside, It all depends how quickly DEFRA contain it.

There is currently an exclusion zone around the farm and a nationwide ban on moving sheep,cows and pigs.

If we end up in the same situation as 2001 then the countryside will effectively be closed and many businesses will go under, all ready I've heard of one tree surgeon who keeps his kit on a farm in the exclusion area so no work for him next week = no money coming in this could be echoed nationwide.

so as for how it affects mud clubbers green laning I think we just need to sit back, wait and be sympathetic to all the people who's livlehood's are affected. and when you can get back out and support countryside business this could be very soon if the outbreak is contained or weeks who knows.

All depends on the government and the Deparment of erdaication of farming and rural affairs.

Quite agree i mainly saw the effect, campsites shut, B&B's local pubs cancelled local shows, above all "good will" was lost.

No "off roading" people drifted away, local clubs lost members, people got out of it. parts suppliers noticed a deline esp. in speclise parts.

Looking back lanes were closed but never to reopen, events never to run again, certain clubs never felt the same again. In some ways its never recovered from the last time.

Well, Im a registered gamekeeper with Defra and usually, things like this I get a phone call telling me to check this, that and the other....this time I saw it on the news, so they cant be acting that quickly!!!!

It does tend to bring the country to a halt agriculturally, no transporting livestock, all beast in the area culled, washing down wheels and vehicles on and off the roads and farms, disinctant carpets every couple of miles on rural roads!!

Tell me about it!! The birds are no where near big enough to shoot, due to the whole weather thing, now it could all be ruined by another outbreak of FaMD.

It was actually confirmed on THURSDAY night but not released to the press until yesterday evening,DEFRA imposed a 3Km boundary immediately and i believe the cattle were slaughtered today.National ban on movement of animals in place.(According to the BBC).

whats worrying is that if the disease has surfaced its the incubation period of 5 days before that where it could have been transmitted around the country.
due to the fact animals are moved distances to abbatoirs now it *could* be anywhere, lets hope not
farms round me now are on high alert and have closed their gates to everyone in fear of it

We came across some guys from a Landrover club on Salisbury Plain yesterday and they were telling us that the MOD were closing the Plains to the Public because of the foot-and-mouth outbreak.

I am currently in the Isle of Man at the moment and already Police tape has gone up on most footpaths and byways, the Manx Agricultural Show has been cancelled as may the Manx Grand Prix to prevent any possibility of it coming onto the island, as last time this will affect most things rural including tourism but it's only a drop in the ocean as to what may be if foot and mouth spreads, it needs to be taken seriousley and if this means our hobby's are put on hold for a while then fair enough, I was planning a green lane holiday in IOM in the next few months but it might not happen now.

And as for the pathetic comment about farmers getting compensation, speaking from experience, compensation barely covers half of the production costs let alone the measly profit we gamble upon receiving once a healthy animal is sold. And a herd isnt bought a herd is made, and this often taken an entire family tree to achieve. So unless you understand the countryside and how it works, keep your un-educated statements to yourself.
