strange rumble noise help

Hi

some help need please when i put my free wheeling hubs into 4x4 i get a rumble grind type noise which comes and gose depending on what speed i am doing ( it does not do it when the fwh are in 4x2

i have checked the oil level in the diff and it was right to the top and i also checked the swivels one was full the other just needed a top up  so i jacked it up to have a look around at the props and stuff the prop that goes from the box to the front diff had some side ways movement near the diff . i also checked the wheels for movment one was ok but   the drivers side one had some movement when i had my hands at 12 &  6 oclock ? is this wheel bearings or something worse
it did not sound like a wheel bearing noise ???????

what make of hubs do u have

Play at 6 and 12 o clock is the swivel pin bearings.
They don't rumble when worn though - just knock.
Could be your driveshaft U/J's, my first 109 rumbled for a short while then the U/J broke into bits and locked the wheel.

This may sound strange, but what engine do you have?
When I first got this land rover (V6 with PO made exhaust), it made a nasty clunky noise which I could not figure out every time I put it in four wheel drive, in the end, it was the propshaft rubbing the exhaust, the hammer sorted the exhaust out to bend round the propshaft properly...

You mention the problem when the hubs are engaged - is this when in two wheel drive, or 4?

A couple of things to try for isolation of the problem when driving, isolates a front axle (or hubs issue), or front propshaft.
Hubs disengaged - low box (red lever back) - gives 4wd and rotates front prop - got noise?
Try again with no front prop if you then want to further eliminate it and blame your transfer box.
hubs engaged - low box - gives 4wd, rotates front prop, and hubs - got noise?
Try again with no front prop to blame your front diff / other axle component.

To eliminate a axle bits, I think you could do something like:
Find a flat surface, jack up one wheel, chock the opposite corner (first)
Disconnect the front prop
Engage both hubs
Turn the wheel you've jacked up, and watch the input to the diff - it should Turn as you are turning the wheel, if it doesn't and it's grinding you've got a broken half shaft in there (or cv). Try the other side too.

Hope it's just the prop...

the engine is a 2.25 . i have just had a thought i had a set of parabolics fitted about 2 months ago could the prop be sitting lower and be rubbing againsted the chassis ????? may check this tomorrow

problem solved it was the front propshaft . only took about an hour to fit one the the easiest jobs i have in ages  :D
