Fairly daft oil question

I need to top up the oil in the rear diff on the Disco, and change the oil in both diffs on the 110..........is it the same stuff in both vehicles, and is it EP90 ?

The Haynes book of fibs for the Disco says to use 75W/90R in the diffs - is this EP90 ?

And finally, Haynes also says to use 75W/90R in the transfer box - is this correct ?

In fact, so daft a question that no one is prepared to answer it.......perhaps I'm being a bit dense about what oil is what - anyhow, off to the motor factors to embarrass meself now  :oops:

Ep90 for both vehicles, not sure about the transfare box sorry.

LT230 T-Box will be EP90 and so are your axles.  The Gearbox is probably ATF.  The odd one out is the T-Box on RRC made by Borg-Warner, it uses ATF.

Now EP75/90 is a semi-synthetic Extreme Pressure oil that starts with an equivelent viscosity to a 75 oil when cold but keeps it's viscosity when hot so behaves like a 90 when hot.  Effectivley making it less thick than a 90 on cold starts, better for gearchanges and fuel economy.  It does NOT thicken up when hot however.

Now I read somehwhere recently that GL5 spec oil is no good for older cars, or as it was put "gearboxs with yellow metals in them", but Halfrauds sometimes stock GL4, sometimes GL5.  GL4 is cheaper anyway.

To do both diffs, and the T-box I need nearly 6 litres, that's just over £60 for some oil...........is this right, or are they trying to take my trousers down ?

Admittedly they didn't have any 5litre cans, it was all one litre bottles.

Paddocks - good call, free delivery if you spend over 50 beer tokens if I remember..........and seeing as the Disco rear diff pinion oil seal is peeing oil big time, and the passenger window mech just chucked all its toys out the pram - I'll hit the 50 squid mark no probs !.........no beer on Friday night for me then  :(

Not sure where you heard that. GL5 is for Hypoid type gears, where extra "sliding" pressure is exerted on the oil, so for diffs use GL5 for Gearboxes and transferes use a GL4

Now I am confused.......

Paddocks don't appear to sell oil online - fair enough, it would cost a few quid to courier/post.

Did a search on Google, and found Morris Lubricants - who sell online, but you can have:

EP75W/80 or
EP80W/90 or
EP90 or
SS75W/90 - semi synthetic or
FS75W/90 - fully synthetic...............arrrggggghhhhh, which one do I need ?

On the bright side, they do 1, 5 and 25 litre drums, and any order over 50 beer tokens is free delivery !

Ive just got Halfords G5 at about £5 litre with my trade card and £7.99 normally, yesterday  :?

I've started to buy all my oils from the local oil suppliers (Ormskirk Oils).
It works out cheaper to buy it in 25 litre drums, especially without the fancy Halfords/Castrol/BP label on it.
I tend to use a lot of oil as I change it regularly.

Which would be fair enough, as the diffs don't contain any brass or bronze parts, but then I don't think Rover diffs are hypoid either, the pinion is on the same level as the crownwheel.
