I may well find myself needing a reliable LWB 4x4 very shortly. It'#ll be for business and it'll at the least need basic offroad mods, winch and roof rack.

It has to be able to carry a lot of IT equipment in the back in reasonable saftey, will need ladder on the roof and its going to be going up dirt tracks, byways and around farm and industrial yards.

Its going to have to cover a LOT of milage too, so its almost certainly got to be a mid range TD engine of some sort, no V8s or petrols. It has to be ultra reliable too, I'm talking about 1000s of miles between bits dripping off.

Trying to decide right now between a Hilux with a truck top or a 110. Its the Reliability thats leaning me towards the Hilux. LWB Paj is out as they cant actually carry that much and have a habbit of eating £400+ injector pumps.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

After now owning a 110 for 5months I think its brill but its not to say Im not thinking of adding another S2 Disco to the stables at somepoint in the next 6months aslo...

Have you thought about a S2 Disco good milage very comfortable remove the rear seats and you almost have 6ft in the back....  Just another option for you...

I'd go for a 110...better offroad & lower depreciation & easier to mod.  As long as you look after it it should last well...plus there is plenty of support here should it throw it's teddies out the pram  :roll:  :lol:

There again I am biased... 8)

In Gambia I had a conversation with a Toyota owner who had a '89 4.2L NAD model.  I was in the 101.

By that time I'd had to tweak & balance the carbs, replace the crank oil seal, clutch plate, gearbox mount, engine mount, exhaust mounts, the exhaust manifold was blowing, a couple of hubs were weeping, the swivels were leaking, and the gearbox was leaking.  I'd also had to bodge a migrating anti-roll bar and replace a steering ball joint.  In 2 months.  I was shortly to bust a diff and lose 6wd.  (To be fair, Gambian and Guinean roads are capable of swallowing trucks whole, so the thing was getting totally hammered.)

Tony had driven right across Africa from north to south and back again, over many months.  I asked him if he'd ever had any problems.  "Oh yes," he said, "the switch for the headlights packed in once and I had to replace it."

Its solely the lack of reliability (real or perceived) thats making me even consider another make. put it this way. Lift kit, hard top, roof rack and Winch for a Hilux will probobly cost more than a 110.

Also my budget is limited, meaning not a new veichle and depreciation isnt an issue. Also meas a D2 is unlikely too.

I think a D2 TD5 could cost you less than a good TDI 110 now?  There's one for sale up the road for £5,500, not sure what mileage but it looks good.

Sounds like you need a good ex-utility 110 that's already got most of the mods you want already.  :roll:

i dont know what hilux's are like, but if it did break, my money would be saying you cant fix it with a hammer and a bent screwdriver... where as they're (almost) the only precision tools you need with a land rover :P

But then your 101 was quite seriously modified and probably carrying a lot more weight I'd guess.  All that after a full career in the forces who aren't known for pampering their vehicles.

What year was your 101 built? I don't think many hiluxs last quite as long no matter how reliable they are.

Evilgoat, I wouldn't assume that just becasue it's Japanese it will never break down, so consider the costs of running/fixing it.  Yes Land Rovers break, but that's why the bits are so cheap and you can pick them up anywhere.

Yes, 5 tonnes all in, which to be fair is always going to put a lot of strain on components specced for a 2 tonne vehicle.  I don't think it'd had much action in the forces - I think most of it came from NATO vehicles which on the face of it had spent most of their lives in mothballs.

It varies depending on which bit of the 101 you're referring to 8) , but about 1976.  OTOH, I seem to have had just as many problems with my 1990s Land Rovers!

i'd def. go for a 110, we'v had the same one in the family for years, its a 1996 300tdi and it just keeps truckin' !! My votes with a 110, i think all the points have been covered but ye, they are easier to mod and there are hugely available parts for them, be it spares or accesories!


They also look cooler  :wink:

My business partner had one, did over 200k in 4 years. never dropped a beat and that thing was pushed to its limits every day.

I remember towing it off the A30, in my 90 :shock: , at Okehampton too... :wink:...fueling issues :twisted:

I drive a Defender 110 for work, but.........

I own a Hilux, it's the most reliable car I have even owned and I have had it 8 years + and it's 15 years old. I cannot think of any reason to change it.

A 110 has it's place, but I could not live with one as my only car.
