Fairey Free Wheeling Hubs - Fitting

Hi, Anyone have any fitting instructions for Fairey Free Wheeling Hubs?

First query though. when I took off the O/S hub cap I found a 109 round slotted nut NOT the hex one I'd expected on a SWB.

Anyone else with a late SIII SWB (A reg) found this too? do you think they were trying to use up stock ready for model change?

Or how would I check to see if I have LWB front axel etc? Any idea of location of part No. etc?

I found the same, with a retaining split pin that clips over the nut. Mine had 11'' drums on the front so correct me if i'm wrong could be a 109 axel setup.

dont bother they dont make any diffrance, to mpg and when off roading are a pain if you have forgot to lock them on.i took mine of and binned them. best thing i ever did on s3 :lol:

Late model 88's have 11" (twin leading) front brakes the same as 4cyl 109's as standard.  I think its from about 1980.  They also have different wheel bearings (inner and outer identical which I think are the same as rangerovers) though the two probubly wern't introduiced at exactly the same time (thats too logical).  It was both a performance improvement and to standardise parts across the ranges, thus money saveing.

When the fronts went to 11" twin leading shoe the rear brakes became the same spec that 10" fronts usally are - ie had bigger cylinders fitted.  For this resion the mastercylinder capacity was also increased to LWB spec.

You can retrofit 11" front brakes to any SWB series but you can't up the rears  without a bigger mastercylinder.
