Do i fit 235/85 or 265/75? - can't decide...........
« on: September 04, 2007, 13:58:25 »
I'm in the market for a set of new tyres .
I'm going to change from the original grabbers which are 235/85 to BFG's , but i'm not sure which size to go for.
I know that they're both the same diameter but the 265 are wider - will this cause any problems off road with the wider tyre rubbing on wheel arches etc on full articulaton?
Also willanything else need to be altered if i fit the wider tyre?

Cheers

Darren

i run the 265/75 and have not had a problem with them. it rubs on turning circle, but so does the 235/85's so IMO go 265/75.
no probs with rubbing abart from as i said before the full lock.

I'd suggest the narrower tyre 235/85 as narrower tyres tend to cut through the mud to solid ground where wider tyres have a tendancy to float on the mud.

That said not sure if the differenc betweeen these two is enough to see a significant difference.

Still... that would be my choice and reasoning.

265/75, they will look better. the difference between 235/85 and 265/75 isnt really gonna affect anything off road.

265/75 will have more grip as they are wider so go for them

I have 265/75 on the disco & the 90 never had any problem been out with lads with 235/85 they have been stuck i have drove though so i would say 265 every time the only thing i would point out is the steering stops thin tyre turn more. Ie lock to lock.

theres arguments both ways but not a huge amount in it...go for the cheapest of the 2

i've had 235/85R16 BFG MT's, good in mud and on tarmac
33x12.5R15 BFG MT's not great tbh
265.75R16 insa turbo special tracks, awesome in mud and ok ish on tarmac

I'm on the second set of 265s on Heather and for most of the time I've had them on I have been happy with them, but I am considering a change to 235s for the next set. There again my use of the tyres has changes somewhat from a bit of gentle laning to driving at reasonable speed off road and the 265s don't seem quite as happy as I would like at 30mph+ on wet cat 1.

The 235s on Mathilda seem to cope with most things that I throw her at, but the suspension, cage, seats, harnesses and lid all contribute to the feeling of security at silly speeds.

How either tyre performs mud plugging I have no idea as I can't see the appeal.

Watching this thread with intertest. I'm running 750 16s on my old military 110 and am trying to decide what to replace them with. They are great off road but lethal on wet tarmac.
