Own up, who sleeps in their defender?

I dont mean full time but how many of you occasionaly sleep in their defender?  

I have a caravan for family outings but (very) occasionaly get a pass for a trip out with the lads for a beer drinking camping trip!  I hate packing up damp tents even more than putting them up in the 1st place!  Anyone camp in a landy?

I am not after posh, (dont expect a bidet lol) and am after no more luxury than provided in a tent.  Just wondered if anyone had done any specific modifications to cook/sleep/sit in the back of a defender?  Think the dripping condensation might get on my chesticles but I am only 5ft 10 so there should be enough room in a 110.

So come on, any landy camping tips?

No condensation problems if the original owner of your 110 Hard Top took the trouble to order it with a full headlining  :lol:

Then the combination of insulated sides, thermarest and ME Sleepwalker III makes for a very cosy place to spend the night, even in wet welsh forests.

And there's plenty of room for Katy to strech out across the front seats.

As for cooking, what's that? I just wander over to the XOX van for food.

the 110 I am getting has no headlining!  So the moral of the story is camp near burger van? :D  As for sleeping in a 90, rather you than me! lol  I am only 5ft 10 and it sounds like a nitemare!

im 5ft 11, had to sit in pass seat with my back against the door and feet across the drivers seat....omg never again  :shock:

but if i do...i must remember to lock the passenger's door so i dont fall out when the pillocks of a co driver plays a prank  :P  :P

Ive tried in both a fiesta and a neon

Festa was in Tamworth services after my mate that was driving ran out of 'awakeness' Was fine till the curry scented wind started, spen 15 mins sat on the bonnet, was way too unpleasent in there.

Neon, on the way to the Yukon, pitched the tent, saw a Kodiak bear, chickened out and slept in the car :) NOT comfy. On the way back we went for a motel instead.

believe it or not i came across a relient robin camper last week it had a taller fibre glass roof, sink ,cupboards and a fold away bed oh and a socket on the side for mains electric..... so you can make a camper out of eny thing  :lol:  :lol:  :lol:  :lol:

Well I can get a decent nights sleep in my SWB so a 110 should be easy enough to convert to be a reasonble accomdation for a nights kip.

i slept in my rangie a few times...most comfortable place seems to be passenger seat reclined right back...im near enough 6ft...

Camping in a landy? T'was one of the main points for getting 110!

Condensation can be problem becuase her previous owner didn't fit a headlining! In the summer it ain't a probelm unless there are two of you in there. Winter gets a bit more fun, but I usually just slide the sleeping bag into a bivvy bag and jobs done. Very snuggly even when there's hard frost outside.

By using a set of five 50ltr 'really usefull boxes', you can floor the bed of a 110, and then use a double air bed to give you a room for two. As for cooking, I either shove everything forward, or stand behind Wolfie in XOX que!  :lol:

buy a cheap futon it'll sit across the wheel boxes. As for the condensation line the back out in Foil backed closed cell foam, Laminate Flooring underlay. Looks really neat and insulates the back as well so it warms up quicker in the winter.

im 6ft and a tad and i sleep happy in the back of my 110. was the reason i bought it as agree tents = damp = unhappy

fold down bed Z bed mattress makes for comfort.

Slept in my 90 a couple of times after unplanned nights out. Never seem to remeber that passenger seat is probably more comfortable. Fairly unpleasent waking up with a hang over in there.

I Have slept in the drivers seat of the 90 a few times, head against the seat belt mount, not the most comfy place i admit but bearable for one night......   I'm 6' 3".

I've slept in a RRC once at bala, with no sleemping bag #-o  in november brrrrrrrrrrr.


This was made worse by [irish accent]peshed[/irish accent] people playing with headlights round a bonfire and passanger that snored, wheres a roll of duct tape when you need one :-#  :twisted:

Futon in the back is a nice idea too!  I am not after building a motorhome ere but a bit of sensible conversion for comfort sounds good to me.  Get yer pics online.  

As for sleeping in the boot of a fiesta, sod that!  I slept in my cavalier twice, once in the drivers seat with it wound back and once on the back seat.  Both stick in my head as nitemare nights!

Condensation can be a major problem, but I solved it by sticking cheap foam camping mats to the inside of the roof. Tesco do a 'Value' range at £4 each.

Anchor supplies for storage boxes (not just ammo boxes) and machine mart for cupboards. Buy a stackon tool cabinet (start at £55) and take the castors off.

I sleep in my freebie every camping trip, i fit perfectly in the boot if i fold the seats up as for cooking, i just stand at the back door with the stove inside the boot

When I had a 90 I used to sleep in the back of it, now I've got a 110 it'd be more comfortable but I'd have to get a set of curtains made up

Go weep. Double bed. Single bed. Cooker. Loo. Kitchen sink. Fridge. DVD. Laptop hookup. Just bought a shower to rig up (outside of course).

Nice!  I want one!  Did you buy it with the roof on or have it fitted?  I had a look through your profile pics but the inside hasnt got all the fittings?  Any chance of some inside pics?  I would love a 110 camper but dont fancy paying a fortune for a pop up roof :(

We  bought it as a straight matt green One Ten.

We then had the roof put on by Foley SV (just after that are the only shots of the inside). Foley stopped doing the roofs shortly after. I think they only made 15 in total but may have been 20.

Other options are a couple of companies in austria/germany and dormobile down south. I think dormobiles are side hinged and made of fibre glass so cant be used as a roof rack.

I will try and get some shots of the inside tomorrow. Essentialy we still have the 2 sideways bench seats with sink on one side between the seat and the rear and on the other there is the cooker. Both are built into/on cupboards to give extra storage. There is also storage under the bench seats which have custome cupboards built in.

The 'single bed' was made by fitting a bulhead removal bar. With this fitted we can remove the front passenger seat squab (placed in footwell) then fold the front seatback forward so it is completly flat. The back cushion of the bench seat is then placed over it giving a bed that is a little narrow but well over 6ft long.

The awning is a cheap caravan one from towsure (cost less than £80) fixed on by a caravan awning rail that is screwed to the bodywork. The awning can be slid out for storage (stops anybody with light fingers helping themselves).

We made the roof console ourselves and it houses the radio and CB.

Made the cubby ourselves and used an elctric switch console, designed for a boat, to fuse and control all the extra electrics (with a seperate leasure Batt. that also powers the winch).

The internals were designed and built by Karen (the wife). I just did all the electrics.

Jobs to do are new suspension as the old one has just about given up, make some door cards and a new paint job. But I dont think it will ever be finished LOL

Yes i slept in my 90 truck cab only last week i was driving back from wales and was knackered so had a couple of hours across the seats i`m 5`10" it wasn`t too bad minimal condensation.
