Vintage Car... or Land Rover?

After my recent grumbling about the Disco, I read this and realised if you substitute the words "Land Rover" for "vintage car" you get quite an appropriate article...

Interesting but there again just started up a landy left for the last 9 months, battery still ok started first time.

Modern car the battary would be flat, requring a recharge, the ecu would reset itself, the radio go into "i'am been nicked mode", alarm fail, immoblsiier mal function, and need to spend at least a morning with the manual to work out the immolbsier code.

Then the computer will state need a service.
Without a club  2008 - any takers

I wish people wouldn't knock Land Rovers.  Yes I know some have problems (don't all motors?) but I have found them to very reliable and I would never have a different type of 4x4.

Currently, we have a 1991 110 V8.  In the two and a half years of ownership, we have replaced (apart from service items):

1/  Alternator
2/  Master cylinder

and that's it.........

Our Disco (1996 V8 ) has only been with us for three or fours months, but has been to Scotland three times and has covered 6,000 miles.  It that time, we have replaced:

1/  Nothing.

Had a RRC LSE 1994 for over two years, sold it last year.  In that time we replaced:

1/  Rear tailgate.
2/  Air flow meter.

....and that's that.

Had a 1993 90 for 18 months, covered 30,000 miles.  Apart from servicing, replaced nothing!  No problems whatsoever!

Please can we stop this Land Rover bashing now.

I'm Land Rover bashing as somebody who has owned 4 - a 1976 101, a 1992 Discovery 200tdi, a 1996 P38a 4.6, and a 1999 Disco TD5.  Apart from the 200tdi, which was pretty good, I've had a lot more problems with the other 3 than I think is reasonable to expect from a vehicle of their respective age/vintage.

With the money I've spent on mine over the years (running into thousands for each vehicle, and these weren't poorly-maintained, junk cars) I'd have to seriously consider whether to buy another Land Rover.

See here for my moaning about the latest massive repair bill.

It's funny that the 200Tdi took allot more abuse than the others too...seem to remember wheel bearing probs with that too  :-s
You can't really say that the 101 was justly treated...5 Tonnes dragging itself around Africe isn't normal wear & tear...more like destructive testing  :twisted:  :roll:

I'm off diving  :D

Well, there were 4 new wheel bearings, plus a new gearbox and steering box, but I didn't think they were worth mentioning...  Given it was fairly high-mileage I can sort of understand that.  It's a new head at 92,000 miles that I find galling.  And all the problems I had with the P38 at about 80,000 miles.

That's a fair point, but I had a grand's worth of repairs to it and a week in the garage before I'd even got out of Spain!

I can see where you are coming from.
The 4.6 Thor engine slipping bore liners at 80,000miles...Td5 blowing head gasket at 92,000miles...LR sure know how to make them! :?
The funny thing is you get a vehicle sorted then sell it on to some lucky person  :lol:
How long is the Disco going to last :roll:
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!
