Rear transfer box bearing and seal

i have a oil leak on my hand brake drum and noise when on and off the power is it hard to change this seal and bearing all advice greatly received

Seal no, bearing...depends which one!
Change the H/brake for an X-eng disc brake while you are at it.
You got those Boggers yet?  :twisted:

are they harder than gearboxs to rebuild, at least you no it will be ok if you rebuild it.i was hoping for a quicker way was hoping someone would say you can take the back off in situ

Hi - just spotted this one, and I have exactly the same problem - very useful and clear link thanks!  Entertaining prospect of 'putting the handbrake on as hard as possible' - there is so much oil in it that it won't hold on a slight incline...!!!

But ... I have no reason to think the bearing has gone.  If not, then can the oil seal just be done in situ? Or is the bearing bound to need doing at 125k miles?

You can replace just the seal without all the dismantling in my thread. Just  remove the drum, flange, backplate, and cover, and lever out the old seal with something suitable, such as an old screwdriver or similar item. If there is any play in the drum/flange, then the bearing is the likely culprit.  If any water has got through a worn seal, then it collects and damages the outer bearing, which is what appears to have happened in the bearing in the above tech thread. Before removing the brake drum or anything esle, check for any play - if there is, then investigate further, as a worn bearing will cause a new seal to leak after a short while. If the handbrake is insufficient to undo the flange nut, then engage 1st low box with diff lock engaged. If you are using a breaker bar, then use a jack to apply enough force to break the thread.

Well started by takijng of the rear prop and the big nut was loose so i tightened it up well good .The leak has stopped but still got that dam noise and there was no movment on the bearing

Sorry to crash in but pathetically excited to have completed the job Sunday.

Brake drum only had one M8 screw which had to be drilled out.  The whole assembly was dripping with oil - shoes a complete write off, but I'd bought new just in case....

No dust cover on the bearing assembly either (bearing was fine so didn;t need to dismantle any further) - obviously the BMW assembly costs were being pared in 2000??  Getting the c-clip into the groove of the pin on the hand-brake operating lever was a laugh - not.  Replaced the cable while it was all out, and found that adjusting was only possible with the middle seat access panel out in the cab.  Mind you, got the adjustment better than any garage has before.

Works like a dream - thanks for all your (un-witting) help.  Cheers, A.
