I've just watched this earlier tonight and one particular segment stuck in my mind.
It was the (at first) twin test between the 'big Aussie' Vauxhall Monaro & the Chrysler 300Hemi.

Whilst on the unmistakeable location of Pendine Sands, a C130(?) 'Hercules' lands & disgorges a S-Type R.

A nice brief sequence follows of the Jaguar racing the 'Hercules' down the beach :D

What kind of hoops did the BBC have to jump through to get permission to do that?
I assume that the landing was on the MOD controlled section of sand as a Range Control Tower could be seen in the background.


And Pendine Sands are now closed to us 'mere mortals'

Out of all of them on looks I liked the Chrysler 300Hemi.

Tha Jag was impressive in the straight race, love to have a go  :D

Like seeing again also the sky divers attempt to land in the back of a travelling Merc  :D

not sure they do any ballistic testing on that range (they do that in aberporth and castlemartin)

however the story goes of rocket testing down a track.. not sure if this is true though

im sure BBC would be nice to the MOD in letting them borrow an aircraft and to land it on sand

Don't think it's a 'live firing range', BUT; there is a rocket sled-railway at the Pendine range.
It's used for ballistics testing.
Basically it's a mile long stretch of railway (with about 1/16thInch horizontal deviation over the distance) it uses 18 rockets to accelerate it from 0-880mph in ONE second! (50G) & another four to stop it!

They loosely strap a bomb to it & catapult it into a big concrete block to examine the effects upon the casing (prior to rupture) & the blast/pressure wave.

The White Sands range in Utah(?) is even quicker, it has a rocket sled that has reached a speed of 6,120miles per hour :shock:  :shock:(think that track is 8miles long!)

How do I know this? It features in the excellent book about ThrustSSC, as they used the Pendine sled to test scale models at conditions of supersonic air-flow

The RAF can be bought cheep.

My bro in law goes deer stalking in scotland n one day they shot a HUGE stag. They had to pull it over a mile of bog n stuff to get back to the landrover and there was only 3 of them. They had just given up and had decided to cut the best bits off and abandon the rest whan an RAF Puma chopper starts buzzing around. The Puma flew em back to the landy in exchange for a haunch of venison. Aparantly according to the guide it is common practice, especialy when they are having a special night in the mess (or whatever the RAF call it).

Still not as funny as the piece a while ago (on Pendine Sands co-incidentally) where 'Hamster' had got the Porch bogged & Clarkson opposite locked past him & 'rooster-tailed' him with lots of sand :lol:  :lol:

Or, of course, that infamous exclaimation; "I Am A Driving God!", whilst in the Bowler Wildcat :lol:
