fitting new rear springs
« on: September 16, 2007, 15:14:38 »
Was hoping to fit my new springs to the 130 this aft - back ones anyway - but seem to be struggling at the first hurdle.

Does anyone know an easy way of holding the bottom bit of the rear damper that passes through the retaining nut to stop the shock spinning?

The little flats on the rod don't fit any spanner I have and I didin't fancy trying to put the nut back on after chewing up the threads with a big stilson!

One or two people have said cut the shock off and put new ones on but seeing as am putting +2 inch springs on I wanted to try it on the old shock before I fork out for some longer shocks.

Any suggestions greatfully recieved!

Mole grips or a oil filter wrench with a rubber strap.

But your better getting dampers to match the increase in spring height.

Thanks for that, hadn't thought of gripping damper body - came off no bother!

Bad news is that must have picked up wrong springs - too small to fit my spring cups must have picked up 90 ones by mistake

Yep, 90 springs are smaller diameter than 110 & 130.
You will need longer shocks or -2" shock mountings

What shocks would everyone recommend - have had a little look and pro comps seem to crop up a lot. Have seen some - 2 inch turrets for front on ebay too.

A good quality gas shock should be fine (Monroe, Britpart, Bilstein, Koni, Old Man Emu).
Personally I use Old Man Emu but am tempted to try the new Britpart Cellular
Shocks when I replace them...these are them...

I have heard some bad reports on Pro Comp but no experience of them.

You can get -2" turrets for the front & -2" dropper plates (which you rebolt the old shock mount too) or -2" shock mounts.
I got the later from QT Services.

Hope this helps   8)

Cheers guys,  thanks for the help.

As it happens, I do have a friendly britpart dealer near by whos prices are very reasonable.  Might head in that direction for the time being and then upgrade as I can afford it.  \:D/
