I had a TD5 Disco.  It's nice on the motorways and it has aircon.  However, sometimes I wish I had a 300tdi Defender because they're more practical - lots of places to store stuff, scratches don't matter, more rugged finish.  And I'm convinced the 300tdi is a far more reliable engine than the TD5 too.

If I was in your position I'd definitely go for the 300tdi Defender, no question.

thats what i think especially as i abuse all my vehicles and don't feel the disco would last long - for example i borrowed his disco for a week and supposedly blew the baffles in the exhaust ! - i of course deny all knowledge !

i also bent the con rods in my 90 a few weeks ago while wading !

I'm lucky enough to have one of each - the D2 came first, it's now on 96000 miles and still going ok..........but, I have an English Springer Spaniel (she's 10 now) who comes to work with me and likes to 'lean' on the rear o/s door trim, and although I have waterproof seat covers on, the seats are still fairly filthy. We've now got an additional Springer (3 months old), she's not coming to work yet, but will do when she's a bit older - lord only knows what state the interior will be in then

The 110 however, has no carpet (rubber stuff instead), plastic seats (damn uncomfy when its hot), and plastic door trims - and no middle seat, so I can only take one dog out at a time (they wear full body harnesses that clip to the seat belts in both vehicles, for their and my safety !)

Personally, I'd not be without either vehicle............but if I had to choose between them - it would be the Disco, as one day I can take 4 adults and two dogs (in the 'boot'), the next 4 adults and two kids, the next it can be just me and I can fill the rear up with stuff for the dump......but then I do get much more enjoyment driving the 110, perhaps I'd choose that over the Disco...... :?

I love my defenders and have had several TD5's but would take the Disco II TD5 for your kinda lifestyle anyday, i certainly wouldnt ever go back to a 300tdi over a td5!

110!  I have never owned a td5 disco but have driven a few.  I have never driven a 300tdi defender either.  I still say 110.  I just got an f reg 2.5 petrol 110 and I prefer it to the last two discos I owned.  Much more fun to drive, more room dont care about scratches etc etc.

No comparison!

Actually, if I were buying a 110 I'd go for a 300tdi over a TD5.  Put the two next to each other, and a slightly tweaked 300tdi will keep up with a TD5 without any problems, and I prefer the torque curve (less gearchanging).  (When I've run my chipped, lifted TD5 Disco alongside tweaked 300tdi Defenders, I've not found I've had any measurable performance benefit.)

The down side of a 110 for me is that I like having air conditioning, but I'm also over 6' tall, and you can EITHER have air con OR leg room, but not both...

You can if you have a set of Mud Rails to move the seat back further.  :D

I'm a 110 man, easier to mod for off road abuse, loads of room, 300tdi is very reliable & friendly to the 'home mechanic.  The depreciation is minimal (compared to Disco)...& they look the mutz chubbers
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!
