On my 300TDI there is a disc shaped lump of metal at the offside end of where the steering damper connects to the front diff. I have been told this is a counterweight to reduce vibrations.
Anybody had any experience of removing it and the after effects of doing so as it is in the way of some steering damper protection that I have recently aquired?

Mine makes so much noise anyway :roll:

They were introduced in the late 80s roughly in lline with the EFi RRC which had thicker props and bigger UJs.  It's called a harmonic damper and given that is uses a rubber isolator most are probably not working now anyway as the rubber will have hardened with age or softened with engine oil.
