diesel tank on a 200Tdi S1

Hi all.
Between Christmas and New Year, we went on a stonkin Treasure Hunt organised by those nice people at Impala Adventures http://www.impalaadventures.com in Wales.
On the second day we got lost in a misty forest (despite the 3 other vehicles in our team having GPS - no-one listened to me :roll: ).
During the day a loud clunking noise developed which was found to be the steel (from Discoparts) tank guard whose front mounting bolts had sheared off.
Stay with me, there is a question coming... honest.
Well, in the forest, lost in the mist, Hubbs finally got fed up and decided to remove the guard as we'd finished the off-road stuff. Unfortunately, as the guard came free, so did the tank on the near-side. In fact, the tank didn't seem to be held on by anything other than the guard.

This can't be right surely? Can anyone tell me how the tank itself is supposed to be held - preferably with pictures?

Two other things worth mentioning. The guard obviously did its job as the only 'knock' I recall was when I slid on some rocks and had to do a failed ascent. Also, one of the other lasses in the team has some great photos of yours truly raising the vehicle using the hi-lift to do the work, with not one, not two, not three, but 4 men watching me :roll:  
Apparently, they didn't know how to use it... :?
Still hubbs got very dirty doning the fixing :P

i think the tank should be held on with a strap that runs underneath it

underneath there are two straps at least which hold the tank up

they are bolted to a crossmember at the rear.

Looks as though according to the picture in my workshop manual that there is one top center strap, running across the top from left to right. Then you should have two straps running underneath the tank from front to rear. There should be rear support bracket and a front support bracket for the straps to fix too.

It's been a long time but....
If my memory serves me right.

The Scorpion guard bolts to the same place as the tank straps. To fit it they recommend that you support the tank as you fit the guard and then bolt it all up.

I found it easier to removed the tank strap bolts one at a time and replace them with longer bolts that were upside down.
This allowed me/us to have the tank straps back in place and taking the weight of the tnak as they are supposed to.
Then we used the threads on the bolts to bolt the guard in place.

It made the job a lot easier.

It sounds as though the bolt has sheared on yours which has left nothing holding the tank straps and guard.

Make sure the tank is supported when you remove the guard. If it's fitted as per instructions the tank will drop as the guard is removed.

then again i could be waay wrong cos ive got a southdown on mine which is probably different again!

I've reread Tina's message again and again. I could have sworn Scorpion were mentioned. Although the Discoparts one might be similar to the Scorpion one.

Isn't the Southdown one a tank guard primarily and then an add on recovery point/tow hitch?

yeh

it mounts to the drop plate mount and also the stabiliser mounts on the chassis

optional mount further up the chassis if you wish

Simon says that there were no straps in place when he fitted the Discoparts (=very like the Scorpion) guard in place. The only thing was an original paltry, flimsy piece of very thin metal. Which is why we wanted to fit the tank guard in the first place... :?
sounds like we need to try and source some straps if we're going to follow Wanderer's suggestion. I think the stuff we took off is somewhere in the garage still - hidden under the D90 bits most likely :!:  so I'll see if there is anything resembling a strap.

Mind you, I can confirm that the unsupported tank falls down when the guard is removed :shock:  because that's exactly what happened without our trying in Wales. Still we got off the mountain and home safely.

of course, the straps might have fallen off when the bolt sheared :?:  :!:  but surely at least the rear and off-side ones should still have been in place as it was only the front end of the guard that came adrift.

It mounts to the tow-bar mountings, ie the rear chassis cross memeber and the rear recovery eyes, but all the bolts are M12 so you have to clear out the holes first.  Also has an optional mount at the very fron but ours fitted up to the chassis crossmember here so I left it alone.
