Steering Bush?

What’s the name of this bush on the steering? Need a new one as this one is split, but don’t know what to ask for!

That's not a bush it is the steering drop arm balljoint on the end of what is either called the drop arm or the Pitman arm.  It is possible to buy a kit to recondition the entire joint and that will include the rubber boot, which I guess is the bit that has split.  You can also buy a new drop arm with the ball joint in it.  Either way it is a [!Expletive Deleted!] of a job, OK some people say it's easy and when they did it everything came apart, but my experience says it is a [!Expletive Deleted!].

If the rubber is split the joint is probably knackered too.  I am fairly sure that a split in the rubber will lead to much attention from the MOT man too.

8 out of 10 times the drop arm wont come off. we had a 3 tone puller on and it wouldnt budge. so we just swoped the ball joint much esier :D

Not sure that is the right one for your box but most of the Land Rover spares suppliers will do one.  Not sure who the nearest independent specialist is down Truro way.

by looking at that i dont think that drop arm will come off there verry easy. i would go for just the ball joint much easyer

That's the repair kit.  remember though this is a safety critical steering component so if you are in any doubt about your ability to repair it you should seek the help of a qualified professional.   A Land Rover with no steering is very dangerous.

Plan to fit it this weekend with the help of a friend (what are friends for!), then take it to a tyre place to re-check all the alignments etc (would of replaced the drag link, drop bar, steering damper, and drop arm ball).

As always, safety is of the utmost concern when doing any work on vehicles!!!  :)  :)  :)  :)

Changing the drop arm ball joint is a PITA.  It's the inner race on the drop arm that is the hardest to replace, especially if your leaving the arm on the PAS box.
Personally I would change the whole arm for a recon one about £26 IIRC.
When I do mine I undo the large, nut holding the arm on, about a turn, then lock it back off in that position.
Give the splines on the PAS box a good coating of oil & drive it around for a week, regularly covering splines with oil...& check securing nut is still secure with locking tab.  With use the arm drop slightly onto securing nut & will come off easily.
Saves a whole load of hassle with pullers etc...

So the only thing holding the arm on it that large nut? So if I got the whole arm (with the joint in place), it would be a lot easier. I haven't had much of a problem with any of the nuts so far, so Im hopping the nut securing the arm would also come free with a little elbow grease!

Thats the one...it's not the nut that's hard to get off...it's the arm :evil:
The damn thing is usually stuck on there & have seen many hydraulic pullers fail at trying to remove them :roll:

The nut holding the arm on  will come off fairly easy but the arm then has to come off of the box.  Hitting it with a big hammer won't do the arm or the box much good, as has been said earlier sometimes they don't come off with a 3 tonne puller.  I would take the lots of penetrating oil approach now and see if you can move it.   The shaft that it fits onto is splined so it has plenty of surface area to get stuck on.

the nut will suprise you as to how easily it will come undone, its had many years of oil'in  :wink:
just the drop arm itself it the stubborn one, i do as L9OOK has said, drive around onit for a week, but if in a hurry i carry all the kit to change it, go up to a rutted and pot, holed lane, undo the nut down to near the end then go belting up the lane until it drops off

I bought the £3 kit for the disco, tipped the bits out on the table and thought twice!  

I got my entire arm off but it was damn hard work.  I beat the thing for about 20 minutes, gave up then thought I would give it one last go. A few gentle taps and it just fell off.  

Still looked easier than trying to put that joint together.  Having said that, I didnt have the handy pic thats just been posted!

My advice, stay open minded!  Try getting the arm off, if you cant then buy the kit.
