Does anyone know 'owt about Mercs??
« on: September 29, 2007, 12:35:47 »
Just a quick one, apologies its nothing to do with 4x4s just my other motoring disaster of the moment!!

I have a 2001 Mercedes AMG E55 with the tiptronic/auto box, earlier today I got about 200 yards from my house and the gearbox was in drive but stuck in 1st, I pulled onto my local Spar car park, put it in Park and switched everything off, got out and locked it (usually works when its playing up)

I got back in it and it wouldn't start (it usually says P on the dash but it said nothing??)  It wouldn't come out of park either, I waited for the AA man, when he arrived he was as baffled as I was, he rang his technical office and they suggested a fuse which controlled the ECU cooling fans, sure enough a 10 amp fuse was the key to all my troubles, the man at my local Merc specialist had never heard of them having ECU fans, my predicament is the AA man said I shouldn't drive it too much as if the ECU overheats it will cost a lot more than a 10 amp fuse.

Its a long shot but has anyone got any info on these or know anyone who might know????

Thanks All

Chris

Try knocking it forward into Park.  My old tiptronic Passat did exactly the same.  Just needed a good slamming into Park
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

Take it to a transmission specialist, the will be able to tell you if the fault is in the gearbox or not, do you have any problems changing into any other gears or is it a bit slow to change through the gears??

A fault with the transmission can cause other things to be put under extra stress and as a result they fail, for example your fuse!

The AA man is quite right as you probably already know you really really dont want to go overheating your ECU, for that age of car the price really will shock you, specially for an AMG.

Automatic transmissions are specialist stuff, normall garages most of the time won't even entertain the idea of touching them.

I have also never heard of an ECU cooling fan & definatly would expect the man at Mercedes to have heard of one if there was one.

However if the car does not recognise the fact that you are in park it wont let you start it, the light (unless the bulb has blown) shows you that the car knows it is in park, without that the car will not start.

So there is a number of things it could be from something as simple as a sensor to a torque converter or if your AA man is right an ECU related problem.  I would have expected in a car of that age with all the electrics that control it any mechanic under the sun to have checked all the fuses as one of the first ports of call!!

Seen something similar to this on Merc before, but can't remember which class it was. I remember the gear range switch was faulty due to water ingress (after valeting). Blew the fuse first, eventually the switch died. About £250...

Heve a look at the mercedes forum, some knowledgeable folk on there.  You may find someone may have already posted a similar problem to yours.

Good luck!

there may be an ECU fan on one of these, will probably be in a Box with all the other ECU's (if its like the M Class AMG i had in the other day),

Merc techies wont know as most of them dont touch AMG stuff (I know My mate at our local Merc Dealer wont) as its a bit too specialist.

Just a Quick Question is it tip-tronic (like an F1 car) or a normal Auto???

as it might be oil for the Changing System

Proof! Not much space for a snorkel or winch! And it had the steel plates in all the wrong places, nothing to protect the engine or the transmission! Some people eh?

In reply to posts, it hasn't the flappy paddle type change you just knock the stick left to right D,4,3,2,1 and then back accross for up etc and it comes up on a digital display which gear you are in, a local Merc specialist garage near where I work said he could take it into Merc main stealer through 'the back door' and try it on his diagnostic gear but sounds expensive too me

ECU's do have cooling fans on modern performance vehicles. If the vehicle uses a similar system to the LR's, then low voltage/overheating of the gearbox ECU can cause all manner of madness throughout the vehicle (odd but true).

Good luck!
