this is what happens when you dont change the air filter for over 3 years.

As you can see the filter is all miss shaped as it was sucked against the air inlet to the engine from the air box.   It is well clogged up. No wonder I was getting poor mpg and lack of power.

New filter going in tomorow.

Sorry disco.

Minimum 3 years. I bought disco on Nov 2nd 2005 and never changed it. Will look through previous owner recipets tomorrow to see when he changed it.

Amazing how much faster it goes now and the mpg has shot up (to the better end!)

Would any damage be caused from the engine having lack of air. exhaust was a tad sooty but not any more!

wouldnt do any long term harm as you say will soot the exhaust up due to running slightly richer. you'll prob notice the performance  will keep improving over time as the exhaust system cleans itself out. only bad thing i know with deisels is iff they loose there supply of air they try and suck from the next nearest place which is usually the engine breather side, then it gets to the point when they start to draw in oil and start to burn it then "bang". only way to stop them is iff you stall it, think i'll go and check mine, alan.....

I have a nice new shiny filter now so hopefully no sucking air or oil in the engine!
