The MOT test has just got more ridiculous. The latest special notice sent to test stations states a change in testing rules for number plates. It states:

On vehicles first registered on or after 1st september 2001, check that the registration plates:

a, Display the name and postcode of the supplying outlet
b, display a BSAU 14d marking
c, do not display a honeycomb or similar effect background

Failure to meet these requirements is a reason for failure.

If you have a motor that is 51plate or newer, your car may fail on this!

Utter tripe if you ask me. I can understand them failing odd fonts, italics etc or silly colours but not having a postcode of supplier on?

Its hardly safety related is it?

So they can trace plates back to who made them, stops people making plates that have altered numbers to make names. (they just sell them as show plates)

b, display a BSAU 14d marking

So they cost more?

c, do not display a honeycomb or similar effect background

Honeycomb backgrounds used to be legal.

Our 51 Freelander has just passed it's test today with umarked plates. They are an 'A' prefix reg number, but it should still apply because it was originally registered as a 51.

I would be suprised if there were many testers out there that didnt think this was silly! I know the lads at our place think its as stupid as I do. Thing is if they pass one and get a ministry spot check its a severe bollocking at best and points on their/the test centres license at worst. Is it worth it? Loads will be getting failed.

when did this come in properly as it were? i know pates had to have post code type stuff on it.

puggys got 'show plates' as it were and she sailed through her MOT back in march. I do keep the originals in the car incase i ever do have any problems...

It was highlighted in a VOSA newsletter to testers in July.

Also you are only allowed GB by side of number - England or other football club / Ford or similar car manufacturer is now a fail as well.

I don't think this will solve the problem of people driving round using illegal plates, These people will just end up having two sets...

On another note, It also means that the Shogun I've just purchased will fail it's next MOT as the plates don't show the name and postcode of the supplying outlet. :roll:

The bottom line is it's to make ANPR cameras life simpler.

.... no one should ever consider a paint job that also included the whole rear end and front ends of the vehicle covered in random letters and numbers.

Now that's a fantastic idea! I wonder if anybody's tried that? One in the eye for Ken if it worked. Whilst I'm no fan of personalised plates, I could go for that one if I had a white truck...

Slightly OT did you know that if caught with "non standard" plates the Police could inform DVLA and thus if caught again the plate can be withdrawn and another issued ?
That means the idiot who spends a fortune on a plate only to have to add dots and incorrect spacing so it spells out something can get it taken off them and a bog standard plate issued instead.
BTW AFAIK they don't get a refund of what ever they spent to buy it in the first place :lol:

What really annoys me with this is that the government have been turning a bling eye to the re-spacing for a long time, as it means that more people have been paying them to change plates to something they can re-space to mean something personal.

Yet another government cash-cow!
