Well, at least she wasn't just shot I guess. Now, I tend to take the BBC as a reasonably sound source on things, so, lets do some maths:

Falsely imprisoned for 70 years. Current age, 85. So, when she was 15 they slapped section 22 on her for something she didn't do, and then they lost her. She spent her entire adult life on potent phsycoactive(read:plain nasty) drugs. 70 years of psychiatrists 'treating' her? This isn't just imprisonment, considering she was sane when they locked her up, this must have been - quite literally - psychological torture. And it happened in our country. By accident.

Should this be scaring the bejeezus out me quite as much as it is?

Probably, yes.  But the council is "investigating the matter", so that's OK then.

Outrageous indeed. I heard of a similar case where a lass from a well to do family had been locked away in the early part of last century, after she had dared to get pregnant out of wedlock.
The family didn't want the 'disgrace' amd had her committed as insane; she wasn't when she went in, but she was later.
Don't forget that all this would have gone on at a period of time when homosexulaity was seen as an 'illness' that could be cured by electric shocks, and when it was still ok to give 'Laudanum' (Opium) to babies to calm them down!

Oh yes, you are quite right. Not sure how I missed that. My eyes must have read 'The council is investigating the matter'. I guess my brain automatically translated it into 'When questioned, the council admitted they didn't have the faintest idea what had happened, and asked us to call back later when they would at least have an alibi available'.

But I can guess as to what happened. The good doctor, a respected pillar of the community who's integrity is beyond doupt, yells "Theif!".

Due to her saying "I'm being framed", "You are making this up" & "Stop picking on me." someone goes "This lady is bonkers! Section her!" (Hint: Does that sound frighteningly close to textbook paranoia/delusions to you? 'Cause, you know, it does to me...)

She never gets a trial, or a jury. They don't release her, because they never put her in jail. She didn't get parole, or an appeal.

70yrs. Christ, you do less time when they put you away for life and as you say m' lordship, I really, really do not what to think about what sanitariums were like in the 40's...

The Mental Health Act is still a very powerful piece of legislation and I was very surprised just how little is needed for initial detention under that Act.
The same can be said for recent changes in the law following the naughty people with explodey things becoming more active.
That is scary stuff!

A lad I know of 17 years old found that when he was raided by the bomb squad, right in the middle of his mum's knitting circle!

He'd ordered something dubious off the internet to blow stuff up on the farm (not fluffy animals), and apparently it can be used to make crystal meth, so first the drug squad came knocking on the door.  When they realised he wasn't manufacturing drugs, they sent the bomb squad around instead.

He's now banned from buying explosives of any sort, including fireworks.

In as late as the 1950's people were sectioned and institutionised for suffering epilepsy. If you put a sane person in with chronic mental paitients and treat everyone the same what do you thing the outcome is? They're hardly going to become rocket scientists are they  :roll:

Thank god for medical research and dignity for all, pity it came too late for our family. My mom as a young teenager lost her mom to instutions for having an epileptic fit. We lost out on having a mother and grandmother because she suffered from a treatable illness.
