smoke on acceleration 200tdi
« on: October 12, 2007, 18:33:50 »
:? hello;ollie our 200tdi has a full length intercooler,K&N filter, snorkel and no middle box for performance;is very quick off the mark;but on acceleration kicks out a lot of black smoke! dont know wether the waste gate has been adjusted before we had him or not? Doing 280 miles to a tank of diesel which is £43.00. any suggestions why it would do what its doing on acceleration as it goes like the wind.Has always started with bit of black smoke, but then clears. :)

black smoke is nothing i would worry about as its usualy only unburnt diesel, blue or white smoke how ever is when i would start to worry but to be honest im only speaking from a ford escort point of view here, and i know nothing about landy diesels. does it return to normal after you have accelerated and your cruising at average speed?

When you fitted the intercooler, did you make any other adjustments?
Did you adjust the diaphragm on the fuel pump? I have the allisport instructions somewhere, but i remember all the settings if you want them.

I have an allisport Full width intercooler in my 200Tdi Disco. Goes like poo off a stick. I only get a small puff when flooring it, not all the time im accelerating. If your unsure on the wastegate setting, buy a boost pressure gauge (or borrow one) then you will know your not over or under boosting it. Mine runs bang on 1 bar at full boost. They are cheap, mine was £20 from Eblag.

If you need anymore help, send me a pm. :)

Waste gate adjustment won't really solve the problem (though you should shorten it a bit so you get 1 bar boost   )

If it's just under intial acceleration - i.e. as the turbo is still getting up to boost pressure you either need to retard the diaphragm setting slightly, or adjust the star wheel under the diaphragm so that fuelling progression isn't quite as aggresive.

Any problems give me a shout as only up the road
