hello for my first 4x4 im not sure what to go for, im in the west country and need a vehicle to get me from a-b, funds are tight this time of the year so will be next year, i need it for off roading, but it must be great with economy.

thats why im trying to sell my pc and a radio etc to make funds.

What you gonna use it for & how much you got to spend?
Where in the West Country are you?
No 4x4 is great with economy...expect 26-36mpg for a diesel depending on engine.

I would recomend a Disco 1, early 200 or 300 TDI as there great in everything except, fuel economy is not great at about 25 average, but at least you can improve that and go run on veg oil...

More likely been ragged from pillar to post, over loaded and with heavy off road use in hostile terrain.

Think more of company car, than cherished vehicle.

Although they are usually quite well maintained and repaired.

You can get good ex-MOD vehicles but you really need to know what you are looking for before buying because there are also some real sheds but being ex-MOD there is usually a premium on the price.

My LR90 was a real gem as under the tatty body was a vehicle that had been completely overhauled just before being cast and repesented fantastic value for money. As I was the first owner (like all my ex-MOD vehicles I bought it in the days when you could buy them direct) it hadn't been played around with by anyone else so was very unmolested.

I wouldn't limit your search to an ex-MOD vehicle but it sounds to me that so far you haven't even decided what sort of vehicle to buy anyway. I would do a lot of groundwork first especially if money is tight as when you have bought a vehicle and started to spend money on it you are very unlikely to recoup what you have spent if it turns out to be the wrong vehicle for you.

Ex MOD vehicles might be mechanically sound, though that's a bit of a lottery, but the bargains dried up years ago, so unless you want to drive somehting that's very green, very slow and very hard to park DO NOT buy an ex-mod LR.

Probably best off with a solid if untidy 200TDi Disco, or RRC if it's the right money.

If it doesn't have to be a LR then look into the smaller JAP stuff, though it migh just be slower rather than cheaper to run :?
