Embarrassing Mistake

Look what I did....what can I say....I knew I had lost the hose clip...I looked everywhere for it and couldn't find it so I put the head back on...then I found it...

Look what it did to the head

This is where it came from

Has anyone got a spare head they can sell me?

I can't explain why I didn't see it, I looked hard enough for it.  I thought "I don't want to put it together and risk the clip being on top of the piston, that would be really silly and expensive".
The engine ran really well for a few seconds when I started it, then made some horrible noises and started smoking a lot and ticking over at 500rpm.

it's ok thanks, :-) I have a spare hose clip, that's what I used for photo.

I'd be crying if I wasn't smiling...the worst bit is that this all started when I discovered the glow plugs were knackered and I sheared one of them off when I tried to unscrew it..so I took the head off to get the broken bit out...and found the rockers with big pits in the pads that act on the valves and the rocker shaft actually broken in to four peices...but it all ran fine, just took a few turns to start on cold mornings...I think I should have put up with that and left it well alone.

Ooops :shock:

Went through all that on an orion, only to 'loose' a bit of spark plug. assumed it fell out outside the engine and had them same experience, lest it died there and then not on the road.

I know of 1 300tdi thats breaking but head gasket and pus head, are suspect :( As Dan said, hows the piston and bore? If they are damaged you'll run the risk of a piston failing/melting or start getting hot spot problems.

Sorry it happened dude :( I know you were lookign forward to fixing her.

I've just fitted a brand new head from Paddocks to my sister's motor.  One of the glow plugs had been snapped off at some point int he past and I couldn't get No.4 injector out either (otherwise I'd be selling the head on after reconning it).

Anyhoo, new head and injectors and it goes like stick now, and only £300 so not that upsetting given how much a skim and pressure testing might have cost,

Anyway, there's a couple of places on E-Bay selling them for that sort of money when I last looked but as one was Paddocks I drove over, backed the car up to the stores and filled it with goodies :)

I've got hold of a head now, just need to get it skimmed and pressure tested.  Yes the piston will need replacing as well, but the bore is OK...it's lucky I enjoy lying under the car on the front drive...at least my neighbours tell me I do, they see a lot of me out there.  This time last year it was lots of welding and between there's all the routine servicing.

I did somthing similer on a Porsche years ago, was fitting rear shocks & 'lost' a 10mm bolt so just replaced with a new one, started ok & then stuck on full trottle  :shock: , swithched off thinking the floor mats were holding the pedal down, started again & all was well, two days later Vehicle came back  :roll:  engine had gone bang, the bolt had been sucked into the head & jammed under a valve, bolt must have droped into the air intake pipe while the filter was off to get access to the shock's, Boss was none to pleased  :oops:  :oops:  :oops:
