Soft spongy brakes

I think I'm still getting used to driving my Discovery (but loving every second of it :D ).

Although the brakes work fine, I just have the feeling that they are somewhat softer than they should be - or maybe they are all like it?

The brake pads are new all-round, post Bramcote :roll:  but the garage did say that the front (or rear?) discs are near to replacement.

When I press the brake pedal, it seems to travel a little bit too far and although the brakes are working, there's no real "bite" there.

If I take my foot off and immediately press again, they feel a whole lot better.

So, any ideas on what might be wrong, if anything?

Could be the vacuum pump or one of the vacuum hoses.

could be air in the system,if u had drums on the back id say that they were needin adjusted but u dnt,Or it could be 1 o the brake flexis has split through the inner & is swelling up,any1 else got any ideas?

if you look on the bulkhead just to the right of the brake master cylinder there a t piece from the brake vacuum line. the small rubber pipe tends to preish at the t piece and theres a loss of vacuum.
quick fix is to snip of the end so you have fresh pipe and replace

Thanks, I'll check it out tomorrow. Not quite sure why the second press of the pedal makes them work so much better...

My brakes are just as you described but my mechanic said my brake servo is the fault :?

Need to figure it out so your input would be wonderful :)

I just haven't had chance to look yet - mad amounts of work on at the moment. Maybe I'll get chance tomorrow morning ... oops, I mean later on this morning

I've got similar probs on my DSII!  :shock:

 - I've just ordered new discs all round - EBC cross-drilled and grooved and top spec EBC pads, 7000 series for front and 6000 for rear. I also have some Goodridge braided lines to fit!  8)

Hopefully there will be a noticeable improvement!  :roll: - or I'll be sad as well as considerably poorer    :lol:

No honestly, ours goes like that when off-road due to the pumeling it's getting, the hub rattles round on the stub axle and if there's too much play it pushes the pads back into the calliper.

I've just put new pads on the front and I'm getting a similar effect.  I notice it more because I drive several different cars.  All I've done is fit new pads so I'll see if it settles down over the next 1000  miles.
