Drunk driver
« on: November 04, 2007, 23:43:40 »
On Friday evening we were heading home and came across a car across the road totally stoved in at the front. The LH front wheel was in the passenger foot well! There was one other car, not involved, parked up and a few people from houses. We stopped and there was no driver! The airbags had deployed and the car was steaming away nicely!

There was someone already phoning the emergency services, but no-one seemed to recognise there was no driver! I quite amazed myself as I just kicked into action. Checked the car for fuel smell. Nothing but steam. Checked it for occupants in case there was a child in the back. Nothing. Then I saw someone in the darkness about 100 yards up the road. He was staggering around all over the place. I ran after him and as I approached I could smell the drink.

I was quite cautious in case he got violent, but he was too far gone for that. He could barely stand up   I walked him back to the car and made sure he stayed until the police arrived.

It seems he had hit the kerb, burst a tyre, then hit the kerb again, bursting another tyre. They swerved across the road and hit a wall. The car then spun around and landed facing the other way

It was just fortunate he didn't hit anyone else.

The Chinese take-away was pretty cold by the time we got home   But an 'interesting' evening.

Had a similar occurance recently. Bunch of youngsters took a corner badly in the rain and ended up with a knack'd car and rather shocked. They did the right thing and posted themselves both ends of the bad bend to warn oncoming traffic and we helped them out with our hazards etc, BUT despite that we had a car driver who thought he knew better and hurtled around us, them, the bend, and over the petrol that was pouring all over the road........................think his name was Dick, or at least the part of his body with eyes, mouth and ears in it was called that by a few that night!

Well done that man.
had a drunk drive hit three cars (one was mine) when i lived in chester. And he tryed to drive off. i ran after him and when i reached the passenger door i saw he had a 4-5 year old kid in the passenger seat. Who was not wearing a seat belt and was just getting back up from the passenger floor i tryed to stop him but he drove the toyota panel van at me. I had to jump out of thr way. the police found the van (lots of people saw it happen) we had all the details of the van and one of the witness even knew the driver. so the police got him. Found out he had no licence and was in a company van. It went to court he and his boss got done for the driving offence and letting a person with no licence drive etc. the crash wrote off three cars Mine was i the middle And it was a very nice mark3 escort ghia I was not happy.

They certainly did.

It was actually quite fascinating watching the incident inspectors and how they approached the situation. First they secured the car (disconnected battery, etc), but because the guy was saying he thought he'd hit someone it was obviously their priority to look. They had the thermal imagers out to check hedges and gardens. Then they came back to the crash and assessed the way it happened. All very organised and slick. Most impressive.
