salisbury axle input seal

Be prepared for a major job! I was told to go and find a good used axle when it started leaking. It was going to be cheaper than the labour to do the job!

It's not the same as the Rover axle. Something to do with a collapsable spacer. I think you have to pull the diff apart from the back to get to the seal. This requires a hydraulic spreader IIRC!

it comes apart just like a rover axle & takes about the same amount o time to change

had to do them regularly on the V8 90 as it had a sals & was run in the muck everyweekend,

i was worryed for a second there cos i changed mine on thursday and all i did was undo the flange, prise it out with a screwdriver and bosh a new one in.

Just looked it up in the genuine workshop manual and there can be trouble replacing the seal. The problem is that the collapsable spacer between the bearings should be replaced each time. If you don't you can increase the preload on the taper bearings each time you torque up the flange nut.

It can all be done from the front, but you shouldn't really do it without replacing the spacer.

Obviously, you can simply swap the seal, re-torque it and hope for the best. And you may get away with it. But it isn't what Land Rover tell you to do.

I got a leaky one, bought the seal and was scared of procedure in manual (as you shown in later post) so never did it. I know some just pop the seal out and say had no trouble... but what about a few tens of thousand miles down the road, will they say the same then? just my luck for it to knacker up quickly anyway.
I was hoping to pick up a decent cheap diff if the opportunity arose and swap it over rather than whole axle :?

oh I was told to check the breather for blockage before doing anything too, as that can cause the leak and clearing a block can cure.

its easier to swap the axle than the diff as the diff comes out the back of the axle & you need a crusher for that

Salisbury diff nose seal is metal skinned and is easily damaged when fitting, so be careful. Remove all traces of rust from the nose and the area inside the nose where the seal fits. Use grease to assist in fitting and if you have one - the round end of a hub nut box spanner will help to knock the seal in. Before undoing the nut, mark the nut/thread and count how many turns to remove the nut. When you reassemble, make sure the marks/turns are the same and the pre-load will not be affected.

while you have the manual out ,

do you have the Torque setting for the Salisbury axle
pre torque setting. and torque

does it need a DTI to set the preload hoping its torque.


I can see that the back lash requires the casing to be squeezed but I suspect that new bearings would bring that within the tolerance


Steve might have to play about with that spare axlewhich ever one becomes spare.
