attempted mugging....

has anyone been mugged?
now im living in southampton and i love the place, even though it is a hole (sorry to offend anyone but it is a port city) still, i love it.
i was walking back to my halls from uni by myself crossing the road when 4 boys (15/16/17 maybe?) were walking towards me, i take my hands out of my pocket... just to be sure... anyway as they come closer on guy says "give us yer munny and yer fone" upon whitch i say " money? i am a student so dont have anY money so **** off (this is true atm i am £35 in debt) and about the fone... you can **** off if you think yer getting my fone. and i just carried on walking....
they walked off in the other direction  8)

some people say i should just give them what they want... but tbh, a) i dont have money, and b)i was a bit up for a fight at the time... after all i had just had a crappy lecture.

anyone else been mugged/attemted? what should i do in future?

I normally have something to hand to make life for anyone wanting to try it substantially more effort when its worth, but being an electronics bod means I normally have tools about my person, even if its because last time I wore that particular coat I was up a ladder.

mmm, but short of carrying my massive maglite torch every day and i cant just go round with a knife in my pocket especially if i am walking round university... so i think knife is a no no. just tonk up a bit  :lol:

I weouldnt advise actually carrying anything on perpose. You have to remeber that theres a high chance anything you use will end up turned on you. If it looks like its gonna get bad just give them what they are after.

Sounds like you handled it pretty well to me...  you got away with your phone intact and without getting beaten up, which is a good result I'd say.

Sometimes you can confuse people by saying random things to them (as if you're a bit of a nutter).  So they say, give us your phone, you say, it's a quarter past three, and you're right, Tesco's is a great supermarket, isn't it.  This does sometimes work but it does also sometimes result in you getting mashed, depending on the mugger...

Had something similar happen a few years ago, coming out of the Cinema two lads (16-18) said give us you chains at which I told thenm to **** **f one lifted his clenched fist so I hit him clean on the jaw & knocked him out  :lol: then his mate put his hands up & said I don't want any trouble mister  :twisted: so he got it as well   ,

Had similar in Salford many years ago, we were visiting a mate there and coming back from the pub (4 of us 18-19) slightly wobbly   a young lad came from nowhere shouting 'give me your money or I'll stab you'
Well he was about 12 and the knife was about 2" long  :lol:

Lets see,  I was walking back home from Uni with a friend of mine called Mark,  we were approached by a large group of people who asked us for the contents of our pockets,  it was suggested that they just go away,  at which point they threw me to the floor and proceeded to kick the [something] out of me whilst Mark had a gun pointed in his face.

Mark, being the brighter sort of individual handed them his wallet and they ran off (complete with the 36p it contained)

We spent the rest of the evening being escorted round in an armoured police van seeing if we could find them...

Sounds like some of you have done alright and others not so  :shock:
I have only once been close to being mugged.
I was 14 and on my BMX with a couple of mates on skateboards in a skatepark in Kennington, South London (Near Brixton)
There was a couple of guys hangin around but we payed them no heed.
When we left on our way back to Elephant & Castle station they stopped us and asked for our money and bike/skateboards (we didn't have mobiles in those days   )
My mate hit one of them with his skateboard and we legged it.
We ran down the stairs (carrying a bike btw) into Elephant & Castle tube station and onto the platform.
They caught us up and produced a knife.
As you can imagine at 14 we were quite scarred at this point.
Then the tube train pulled in and we jumped on, so did they, so we jumped back off again
We managed to get the guards attention and he shut the doors and trapped them on the train.
Off they went and we ran back upstairs, got in a taxi to Waterloo train station and jumped straight on the first train home (still shaking)
I always went out skating or riding in London in groups of 5 after that

The original post sounds like a couple of chancers hoping to intimidate, who were scared off when their intended victim stood up to them. The problem is, how do you tell them from the ones who'll pull a gun? I'm glad I've never been in that situation because I just somehow know I wouldn't give in easily and there seem to be increasing numbers of people who are quite happy to stab or shoot.

Deliberately carrying a weapon is asking for trouble and could look very bad if the case later went to court. Also worth bearing in mind: would you be willing to use that weapon on another person? If you couldn't (and most of us couldn't) then the attacker is very likely to take it from you and use it against you. By far the better bet is to talk your way out. One trick I've read about is to have a "dummy" wallet which is in reality stuffed with fake cards and strips of newspaper - you can hand that over, then fall about laughing after they run off!

i had a bit of bother 7 months ago,

went to see my mate and he lives in a flat in a not so nice part of kent, :(

i was walking back to my truck when i heard mopeds,scooters coming up behind me,2 of them stoped near the back of my truck,the other still on his bike had what looked like at the time a real gun, :shock:  :shock:  :shock:

man i was scared      i looked at him and said what do ya want,he said my truck :shock:  :shock:

i gave him my house keys as i carry 2 sets,car,house keys,when i gave them to him i knocked the gun with the keys and it was plastic, :shock:  so with that hit him in the face,jumped in my truck,started it as quick as i could and see the other 2 boys coming down ither side of me,with that put it in reverce and hit both there bikes,but the wheels on my truck where in the air,going nowhere with there bikes under my truck

i ive got a wheel brace under my seat so got that,got out and hit the other guy in the arm with it,then the kid on the other side ran off,

i called the police after still shaking and when they turned up they looked at the cctv they had,o didnt know it was there,

they got arrested a few days later,lost there bike as they were wrote off :lol:  :lol:  :lol:  but i got £150 fine cos i used a weapon :(  :(

still kept my truck tho,,,but god i have never been any where near that place again,and dont really like parkng anywhere in the dark now

Seriously, doesn't this say everything about what's wrong in this country? If someone points what appears to be a gun at you I'd have said you have every right to use anything you can lay hands on for self defence.

First off Rob, tell the local Plod. There should be a Police Contact Officer at the Uni. They need to know. Even if you can't identify these scum bags, they will then be aware that it has happned in that area and can target resources.
As for actions to take? Hmm, do I take the party line? be very careful about having a pop back, as they may be armed.
There is a saying that if you think like a victim, i.e 'crap, its going to happen to me', you will become a victim.
Another one is that the best form of defence is attack. It is quite legal to get a Pre Emptive Strike in first,providing it is justifiable and 'proportionate'.
I've just done a 'defensive tactics' refresher and I will be more than willing to 'show' you some of our tactics.
Always keep a handful of loose in your pocket for two reasons
1) To give to them if you have to
2) Grip it in your fist, as you punch them,in self defence of course
Keep your car keys in your hand. Think about it.
"I'm sorry officer, but these guys came at me, so I punched him, in self defence of course. I think there might be some DNA on my ignition key.
Of course the ultimate is 'Run like F' to get away.

Ooooo, gonna have to add a small reality check here, I afraid folks.

Whilst this is an emotive subject (having been on the wrong end of it, I should know as well as the next donkey), but we shouldn't be openly inciting or promoting acts of violence. Especially those acts requiring excessive force or 'weapons'.

Speaking from experience, I was one step away from a serious charge following an altercation with a would-be robber. It was a seriously bad experience for all concerned and even if you think you're right, doesn't mean your treatment at the hands of the law will be any happier.

Whilst I'm not going to condemn acts of retribution - be careful with what you do and how you go about expressing it. There's plenty of hot-water for everyone to land in.  

Sorry to seem a spoil-sport, but I have memories I don't want you to have.  :(

And be thankful your not Chinese, one of our staff spends more of her time being an unofficial official for the Chinese Embassy than working, she's been in the Echo recently publising the plight of 'poor' Chinese students getting mugged, complete with photo call etc...
'Poor' Chinese students, you must be joking with their fee's paid and very good living expenses....
But there is a major problem in some areas with the students seen as being better off than the 'new' locals, and some of the old ones too.
BTW my family was from 6 dials and St. Mary's, so I'm more than well aware of the issues in that area!

As for what Eeyore said, be careful of 'weapons' as a friend doing night reception found out when he 6 celled an attemped robber, when plod caught up with said robber (with known history) at the local hospital they then went back and arrested him for assault! Still better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6....

But, if you are mentally prepared to deal with an incident shouldit happen, you are more likely to come out on top of the situation.
Like you, Eyeore, I have seen both sides of the story. Self defence is perfectly legal providing it is proportionate, unlike Tony Martin.

ive had undesirables in our yard at 5am and luckily i was armed at the time as i was just about to go out pigeon shooting, would have caused me a fair bit of grief, cuz even then they wernt that keen on leaving.
i say allow death to anyone trespassing on land not belonging to them, if they were not there looking about to nick something! they wouldnt have died, and decent people do not do this, so what is the problem. apart from youve got to get out a shovel, dig a hole...

Hi All,

Got done over when I was at uni last year working at a certain popular purveyor of sandwiches.

Two armed blokes (BIG knife and Crowbar ground to a sharp tip) dived ofer the counter, shoved me and the other member of staff to the floor at knifepoint, taking our phones while we were down, the other got the manager to open the safe and the till.

Very scary experience as we couldnt see the manager so had no idea what was going on round the front. Als o the bloke holding me and the other member of staff was all over the place, one minute like 'relax, dont worry, not going to hurt you as long as you stay still' to waving the knife or the crowbar in my face threatening to '**** me up'- clearly highly unstable.

Management tried to squeeze out of replacing my phone, police never caught them.

Quite a scary experience.

The other time I got approached by a lad threatening me and demanding I handed him my wallet, I lunged at him and crash tackled him into a lamp- post. Then walked off. I dont entertain petty thuggery.

My self defence teacher gave me the best bit of advise ever and it has stuck with me ever since he said this.

First don't panic . Second try to walk away without saying anything.
and if this dosn't work put them down long enough to walk away.
look over their shoulder  and shout help as if theres someone behind them and as they look around foot to danglies like your trying for a try in the rugby world cup then head for the nearest populated area ie.bar shop etc...and phone the cops.

I had my head smashed into a concreate wall when I was about ten by three boys (now about 20/21/22) anyway I had a few stiches. next year I managed to put on in hospital for 2 months and havent had any problems since untill the other day.

I was a lot smaller as a child. Im now 5'10, 225(ish)lbs or 17 stone 6 (4 months ag I was 19 st 6)

anyway I had this chump try starting in front of his friends (about 5 or 6) when I was walking by on my own, anyway they're all short ***'s so I stop, look at him dead in the eye's and he instantly backs down, his friends laugh at him, I walk off, not a word said. bloody kids

I am always getting mugged! They NEVER succeed but they still try. I look like a "target" I have quite an expensive bike(which they all seem to like!) and i where baggy jeans and a hoodie or t-shirt and usually when im off to skate parks someone will try it on. im not a big lad, only about 5, 10" but what with constant riding, working in a fabrication workshop and lifting it gives you pretty good upper body strength. i don’t condone using weapons...well...not when you can beat them with your fists :lol:  :lol:  :lol:

They are all scum and need putting in there place!
