Many thanks to those of you who posted a on the threads I set when trying to decide what to get. Well here it is. It's a 1998 300 TDi ES Premium with ~96K miles and the body work is in excellent condition. After driving it for a couple of weeks the only thing I can find wrong is that the control panal for the passenger side electric seats seems to have popped out (lost its clips presumably?).

Want to go off-roading in it so should I go for new tyres or 2" inch lift first?

2" lift would allow bigger tyres that won't fit under the car as it is.  That said 235/70 M/T are still very capable tyres.

If you want a lift and big tyres the lift should come first.

now to awnser you question what sort of off roading are you planning ??
if its just byways and tracks the a good set of tyers will see you right as mine is running standard shocks and has done sibbertoft , billing show
now if your going exstreem then put a lift on before tyers then some protection to the underside

Good Question.

It will be green laning only and non-damaging to the environment. I used to have a 2" lift on the 110 and 238/85/R16's on the 110 - I always reckoned that if a lane was in bad enough condition that I might get stuck then I should n't be on it.

I also would like to get more into fording. Always had trouble in the V8 inpite of the precauions I took (if you see what I mean) so I'd like to get things a little higher for that reason as well.
 
I've been to 2 off-road sites for some hard core stuff and on each occassion it's cost me a shed load in repairs and I did n't even enjoy I that much. I won't bother with that again.

I run mine on 235.70.16 Colway all terrains with no lift.

The protection I have fitted is a steering/sump guard; sumo bars; and a guardian tank guard

I use and abuse mine off road, have never felt the need of a lift and the only concession I make is if I know the terrain is extreme I stick on my greenway machos of the same size.

I was setting out for our local trial yesterday on my AT's and sections I drove fine had some of the competetors stumped :twisted:  :roll:

Lifts are not essential, I don’t think people realise how capable the standard vehicle is! The only thing that lets them down is the tyres and the fact everything needs protecting.
