Region / Location
0 No Region Coding
1 United States of America, Canada
2 Europe, including France, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Arabia, Japan and South Africa
3 Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Borneo and Indonesia
4 Australia and New Zealand, Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America
5 India, Africa, Russia and former USSR countries
6 Peoples Republic of China
7 Unused
8 Airlines/Cruise Ships
9 Expansion (often used as region free)

HTH. Also 99% of PC's are multiregion, and will play any DVD. Also any DVD mady by a PC will be designeted region 0 and SHOULD play on any DVD player (as long as you use a DVD disk/writer)

I have encountered computer DVD drives that will only allow you to change region a limited number of times, so beware that little trick by the manufacturers.

I've also heard that some DVD players can have a code typed in to make them region-free. I've no idea where one might find these codes however - if anyone does find them please let me know!

do you know whether your mum's dvd player can be made region free?

i bought mine from argos cos it had a hdmi port on it then googled and found a secret menu and code to make mine region free

years ago (and im talking turn of this century) i was buying films from canada (canadian currency was better than the dollar against sterling) and i managed to get the original matrix on dvd in september

if i remember it didnt come out in the cinemas in the uk until the following december, plus it only cost me 9 quid!

Most Richer Sound kit can be unlocked, there are a number of cheaper drivers and oddly, high end ones, that cant be unlocked.

I have a lot of Region 1 stuff from living out there. Also, interestingly, NZ I beleive is technically region free and I think Auz may be too. It was ruled anti-competitive at some point.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

Just unlocked the first one here (started with a £30 Akura, pretty much a spare so if the code bricked it it wouldn't be a great loss). Pressing "System" 3 times did it.

usually have good buys on DIVX players - usually do MP4 as well and come with USB inputs too ;)
ASDA's own dvd's are brilliant as they can be hacked in about 30 seconds - and have the bonus of being Dirt cheap too :D:D:D

MOst new dvd players will now play divx/mp4, jpeg views, mp3 etc

Got an Akura a few weeks ago, 15" lcd with built in dvd player, plays all my divx movies, 5-6 on a standard dvd, or about 12x45min episodes

Not sure on region free, will have to sort aout a R1 disk and try it, but normally rip them down to save wear and tear on the originals

Also full input for a pc/laptop including stereo sound, not bad for £100+VAT

Best thing is its 12v input so can be used in the caravan as well
