i no naff all when it comes to buying these. i would like to know what spec to go for (motor size, tank size ect) may need to be portable but its not overly esential, it wont be dragged out every day.
basically all i want it for is so i can work on the landy, i want to be able to use the air rachet, air drill ect, it basically needs to be able to cope with a days use of tools.
btw, anyone know were i could get one cheap, only place i have looked is ebay but i need to know what i am looking for.
cheers :D

a stealthy discussion with machinemart will give you an idea of the size and ratings you need, then shop around.. fleabay, adtrader/yeller etc..
i`d opt for the biggest/best i could afford, as a tool you use often, needs to work often.....
...remind me why i bought a landie....?

I keep considering buying one, as there's a few air-tools in the shed, that I've inherited.
I fancy this one from 'Machine Mart', or its equivilant.
'Hunter 60'
It's got a decent-ish capacity & a reasonable CFtM displacement

Are you running it at home? if so you need the biggest one you can run from single phase if you can afford it. This might mean installing a 16amp outlet somewhere, provided the wiring can take it.
Don't be tempted to buy a little cheap one, you can inflate tyres (whoop-de-do) and even run a spray gun but as soon as you buy serious tools you'll regret it.
I'm on my 3rd, what does that tell you
I'm not a big fan of airless either, if you use it a lot you want an oiled one with cast cylinder, preferably branded, not hong-kong-fuey or sunday market tat. If it's second hand make sure it's not on it's last legs either.

i got a SIP one - its single phase 3hp with 150 litre tank - just right for home use and running air tools comfortably without kicking in all the time

The tank size is vital as suggested elsewhere. I inherited a small compressor and it is really frustrating when you are half way through a sheet with the air shears and they stop  I'm not complaining though, it was free :D

A big tank is really uselful if you do something that's intermittant, like grinding, impact wrench, cutting small things at least and drilling.
If you want to run something like a D/A or air saw there's no substitute for CFMs.
