i am struggling, and i dont think its because i dont know how to do it i think its cos im going wrong somewhere.

i have antered numbers into cells A6 and A7 and A8 and have declared the cells as NUMBER.

now in a seberate cell i have put this equasion: =A6:A8 (i also tried: =A6+A7+A8 still wont work)
but the answer wont come up?  :?

any ideas anyone?

You need the SUM command otherwise it won't know what you're asking it to do. Could also be COUNT etc.

Just thought I would share that with you, because I am so chuffed with myself for managing to set my pc up on Ubuntu and getting it to actually work. BETTER   . Sorry.

Rubbish!

Unless it's Excel 1.1 from windows 3.1!!!

Just tested it for completeness... "=A6+A7+A8" should have worked.

Isn't there a 'function' button at the top listing the main calculating functions?

It is good, isn't it? I've seen Linux improve dramatically in the last few years. I bought a copy of Red Hat (you pay for the disks and manuals) ages ago, it was pretty dire, but then I went over to Mandriva in '06. Upgraded to '07, still no problems, now I'm trying to find the time to go to '08 (takes a while to install and configure). Hopefully my floppy disk drive will work again with the new version...

"Goal seek" is usually used in a spreadsheet with multiple variables to do sensitivity analysis e.g.

maybe to vary something like interest rate to meet a certain level of profitability. You'd say set profitability to the required %age, by changing the variable "interest rate".

Goal seek should then find an answer for you!

Ah Linux, certainly has improved recently. I remember the first time I had a go at using Mandrake, must be nearly 8 years ago. Actually downloaded the 2 isos on my 56k dialup connection! Then there were the joys of trying to get it up and running, main problems were with the onboard graphics and sound. And of course no internet, as it was a winmodem!

Tried Ubuntu about 18 months ago I think, and things have certainly improved since my first forays! Installation is a much simpler process these days, and the amount of supported hardware has vastly increased.
