Question from a mate stuck in sweden
« on: December 06, 2007, 16:22:27 »
"It's a tdi 300, everything was fine till the end of a long drive when I started getting smoking, on and off, when not smoking still had max power.
Then no starting the next day, ruled out head gasket unless its a really sneaky one, ie no coolant loss, no emulsion, no fuel in coolant.
Will fire after repeated cranking and run for a second or so then die, so assumed fuel issue.
replaced fuel filter, no joy
cleaned sedimeter, changed seals, no joy
replaced manual lift pump, no joy
replaced injectors, no joy
replaced glow plugs, no joy
cleaned out turbo boost compensator, no joy
checked fuel stop solenoid, no joy
replaced fuel lines in engine bay no joy

also did lots of sneaky fuel bleeding, and tried running from a jerry can plumbed into the manual lift pump, fuel filter and injection pump, guess what...no joy!

I'm getting fuel from the injection pipes when cranking, but what I can't tell is, is it enough and at the right pressure?
I think I may have a problem in the injection pump itself, but am wary of fiddling!"

That verbatim fro a friend who wants to come home for chrimbo but his disco has had a fit by the sound of it.
Only having had the pleasure of the 2.5td 110 I thought you lot might help me/him

Has he tried taking the lid off the fuel injection pump and checking the state of the diaphragm? If he can't get a spare it might be possible to limp home by using the trick mentioned in other threads on this board to increase fuelling on a TDI - a bodge in this case, but if it gets you back to base and you need a new pump anyway...
