Timing belt
« on: December 09, 2007, 19:28:22 »
As I can't find out when the timing belt was last changed on the TDi 300 engine in my Defender 90 I have decided to change it to be on the safe side.

I read somewhere that there is a modified tensioner available, show do I tell if this has been changed or wether it is the original one?.

If it was changed by a main-dealer, aren't the belt/pulley/casing marked up with paint???
(plus, far too obviously  , in the service book as well)

My advice would be to buy the whole kit and fit the lot, start from scratch, make sure the modified crank pulley is the all in one cast job,not the one with spot welded tin guides.

didnt the modifed kit have a crank pulley with a lip on it?

I would say that as the kit has been out for so long that it has been done by now.

You'd be suprised!!!

Did my mates Disco not that long ago, and that had never been done. The front cover had done a good job of eating the belt!!!

I'd check your VIN against the affected VIN range... and if nothing else just buy the basic upgrade kit (KIT 2 listed below), as the kit comes with all the front cover gaskets etc etc (and price wise, usually works out cheaper than buying everything seperately)

Also worth fitting new cam seal, and inner and outer crank seals at the same time.

Taken from here as feeling lazy - http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=12788

The general rule of thumb is that any engine up to some time in 1997 may suffer the problem, and that early engines (1994, 95, and 96) will require the “big kit” (option 1), while later affected engines (late 1996 and 1997) will require the “little kit” (option 2).

All VIN numbers referred to in this post are the last eight digits of the full 17 digit vehicle VIN number, e.g. for SALLDHMF7MA123456 the number you will require is MA123456. VIN details can be found on the VIN plate of the vehicle, usually on a plate inside the windscreen, and stamped into the chassis near the steering box.

The cut off point for affected vehicles is:

Discovery – WA748935
Defender – VA129096
RR Classic – MA664120 (after this the 300Tdi Range Rover was discontinued)

After that point the modification was factory fitted to all vehicles and later 300Tdis do not have cambelt problems. The 300Tdi engines remained in production until late 2006 for some export markets with no sign of any cambelt issues.

Yep, they are still out there. Recently fitted a 96/97 300tdi to my truck that had only done 27,000 miles (lump from a disco that was used only a couple times a year belonging to a caravan club owner 8). The belt had been changed at least once in service history based on time rather than mileage. I changed the belt right away (full kit) to find the one fitted had lost about a 3rd of its width, lots of rubber fluff too.
