Break it or sell it ????

Well everyone - a question.

Do I break the Disco or sell it whole ?

It still has all the mods on it and has a reconditioned box, all new discs, pads, axles rebuilt, new goodridge hosing, all new brake lines, replaced the boot floor and made and welded all the sills.

I want a more road biased 300tdi for regular use.

Over to to you for opinions

try better road tyres instead of grizzlys first . 300tdi do tend to blow up more than 2ootdi

i would keep the 200  as they are more bullet proof engines than the 300s

What, if anything is wrong with it??
If nothing serious, my opinion would be to sell the goodies and a standard disco seperate
ie. if you sell the winch bumper, take a standard one as p/x
sell the tyres/wheels and take std as p/x etc

OR if you cant be bothered or in a rush sell it me   will start the bidding @ £50  :twisted:

There's not a great deal wrong with it. I've got new rear body mountings to put on it, the existing ones are not totally shot, but i do like things to be solid.
It's done 197000 but still pulls like a train.
It's got a light bar on it as well now.
Also got a tank guard and removable towbar to fit.
It's been used off road ( unsurprisingly ) so the paint is a little scratched but it's not dented anywhere

I just fancied something a bit more refined.
Might keep it, can't make my mind up - if someone fancied a very capable off road Disco in some form of deal for their 300tdi I could be persuaded  :D

I'd agree with these guys - i bought a 90 with Grizzlies on and changed them within 72 hours to more road biased tyres-loads better.Also you know your motor and what it's like so you would be buying someones problems for you to sort out. What do we say if it's not broke don't fix it.

Hi do what i did, i got shot of my simex copy tyres and fitted kumho mt like the bfg mts and its like driving a diffrent truck    no vibration no arrrhhh im going round a corner side ways action anymore :lol:  :lol:  :lol:

Hmmm...here's my thoughts...

If you sell your toy and get a standard Disco, you'll only end up seeing a sorted toy again and thinking "oh, I'll just add a light bar, that will hardly ruin it's on-road ability" and that's the thin end of the wedge and before you know it you've re-created your old truck.  Which you KNOW you're gonna take off road, perhaps just a little green laning...to start with...

And let's face it, even a standard Disco, although very civilised for a Land Rover, is hardly the best on road vehicle is it?  Slow, thirsty, hard to park, not even that much room inside, etc etc.

I'm amazed now how much you can pick up a cheap runaround car for that looks and drives perfectly decent, and I bet if you did the sums over the year it could almost pay to run two cars.  If you are going to be doing lots of miles in your Disco, and your mpg goes from say 25 to 40 ish to the gallon, plus less wear on the Disco means lower bills, and if it's not a daily driver you can sort out all those little jobs you never got round to doing, and take it off roading and not need to worry about it as much.  Get a limited mileage policy on the Disco and the insurance might work out the same too?

I tend to think "better the devil you know"...if you buy a newer Disco will it actually be a better one mechanically?

Given how little it'd be worth I'd say keep it.  There's nowt much you can't put right if the motor is basically sound.

If you want it a bit more civilised then get some A/T on it, remove the toys you don't use as this will make it more economical.

But selling it just to buy the same but newer is a false economy, after all you don't know why someone else has is selling their car, maybe they're sick of it breaking down.

I say keep it as have been said above, better the devil you know, hence why I have my worthless rover 620 with sily miles on it. I know it needs £260 of exhaust fitting for the mot in Jan and itis worth about £100, but, £260 to keep a good vehicle going or thousands on a new one that will more than likely break down? No brainer really. I think it is similar to you. Take the toys off and stick em in the shed and pootle about with a basic disco and in 6 months you will soon want the toys back on again.

Well, you're right peeps, I'm going to keep it.

Economy isn't really a factor, it's definately my second car\play thing.
I did spend two full days making and welding the sills and inner wings - not something I want to do again really.
It is awesome off road due to the mods.

I'll do the bit of welding required, fit the new exhaust I've got for it and then MOT it.

A big thank you to all who replied, your responses have made me see sense - which was the whole point of the thread.

I'm going to keep the Grizzlies for off roading, they are awesome, just not that brilliant on road. I'll swap them over as required.

Has anybody got a set of wheels and tyres they want sell so I can make it more road friendly ?

I do exactly the same as you, grizzlies for playing and bfg at's for pootling about greenlaning and towing trailers. the bfgs are perfect for most of my needs when not on tarmac. Put the grizzlies on and it becomes a different vehicle off road.

Top tip is to buy a drill bit that will fit your sockets and use your drill to undo and do up the nuts. Obviously need to loosen and tighten with a breaker bar! But using a drill has meant my record for getting tyres out, fitting and putting others back in garden and a warm drink back in my hand was 45 minutes. I am sure I can beet this one day! :lol:
