Now that the 90 has gone and its getting closer to being 17 im thinking about my first car for the road. What do people think? I was thinking a cheapo old 200tdi disco but would a little car be better?
Any advice?

If you can afford the insurance I would say to go for the Disco. If you try to find a seven seater then you'll suddenly become very popular for nights out. Just go easy on the bends if you have people in the folding rear seats who are a little the worse for wear...

Insurance will be fearsome though - Insurance companies see a 2.5 turbo engine in something that will demolish most other vehicles on impact and charge accordingly. My insurance aged 17 (on a Citroen ZX 1.9D) was well over Â£1k for the first year, in fact one place quoted Â£4k!

Also worth bearing in mind that a real cheapo 200TDI Disco will probably have been absolutely hammered by previous owners and never looked after, so you may well end up spending a fortune on repairs. If you can save a little more and get one in better condition then you'll be better off in the long run.

I would not bother fit a camera and chuck it round corners, make Â£200 a time :lol:

First road car should be a series. A little 2.25 diesel tax exempt jobby. Save yerself Â£200 a year on road tax, generally cheaper and easier to fix if you have a bang or break down and can go on a classic policy which is cheaper.

Yer i need to get some insurance qoutes and then go fro there. I want to go to uni so thought off roading would be a good way to pass the time! And tax i dont mind about i just need the comfort of a disco haha! I was thinking about a little diesel fiesta but if i had a crash in one i wouldnt feel too good wheras in a disco i wouldnt feel it as much. They both cost the same to buy and i know how to fix a disco so it maybe cheaper in the long run.

Actually your wrong, the cheapest for young drivers is quinn direct

They also take into account your driving experience as well and convert it into a no claims bonus.

But for first car you might want to get one of your parents to insure it and have you as a named driver (alot of companies now will allow the named driver to be the main driver of the vehicle) which will make it cheaper and thus set you up for a company like quinn direct so you get your first insurance cheap.

my issues with the sujuki SJ were this...

1) dangerously slow

2) poor fuel economy for somthing that is slow and wont tow a lot

3) Parts availability seemed a little more limited than with a land rover. with most people i know with SJ's just buying rotton ones for Â£50 for spares. which is good, but if its your daily driver, sometimes you need to fit new parts fast so it will get you to work the next morning. no good asking round for an alternator when you dont have a second car.

More to the point, a Disco will be far better if you have a long drive at each end of term (a Series or Defender will become very wearing at motorway speeds!)

I second that, they are in Northern Ireland and are really cheap and have excellent customer service, in the event of an accident they sort it within days!!!

easier to insure than a land rover

easier to modify

less need to fix than on a land rover :lol:

yerrr i think im going to get a discovery but need to check out the insrance! I need to be able to drive long distances in it so rules out a suzuki and a series!

Insurance will drop dramatically after the first year or so, assuming you manage to avoid becoming a statistic. You might find it helps to join the owners' club too - sometimes they can get you a better deal.

Im trying to avoid being a statistic by getting a disco! Otherwise i will have the 1.8 focus! Im already in a owners club and i think some specialist landy insurance will see me through haha! if its cheaper than the focus to insure then i will be gettign a disco

ahh im not getitng into this debate!!! :lol: i was purely trying to be constructive.

an SJ is deffo easyer to modify on a budget, your right there. ive never had one so i couldnt comment on reliability, but it cant be any worse than a mis treated land rover (like mine!)

not sure what you mean by easyer to insure. im only 18 (no NCB) and my 90 truck cab is Â£1800 fully comp. and its on a Q plate. i just rang my one stop insurance shop who sorted it. so im not sure what its like if you go to direct line etc.

and lets not forget that an SJ is waay cheaper to buy in the first place. and if you trash it (most likely rolled :lol: ) then another one is cheap enough.

all said though im a land rover guy, and it sounds weird but i cant say i want anything else 4x4 wise. its not snobbery or jealousy, its just a certain brittishness in me that makes me able to love somthing that is often so flawed.

well no ones said it yet so i will,

SUZUKI VITARA

i have one,use it every day for work as a support unit,then playing off road at week ends

very easy to drive,comfy and are pretty quick,mine with 31s will happily sit on the motor way 70mph,will go further if you wish :oops: 8)

i just drove to the swiss alps in mine,got back thursday and had no probs with at all,

pretty good off road,parts are real easy to get hold of and insurance is cheap cos its 1.6

mark :D

Yep i agree with Wrecker.I use my vitara as my only transport including greenlaning and pay & play day's..quiet comfy good on motorways

Yep I agrre with Gav, get yourself a Vitara, good value for money, good on a long drive and bloody brill off road. Plus cheap to insure and lots of mods available.
