Two ECU's???

I have a chipped Defender and would like to be able to set it to standard when needed (i.e. passing the emisions test). Does anyone know of a mod which allows you run two chips and flick over one to the other when required???

The only thing that is altered is the fuel mapping in the ECU.

even with the remapping should it still not be set to past an emissions test

I don't think its possible to pass the emissions test as the fuel that is being pumped in via the 250bhp mod.
When I'm driving off road on private land I would like to use the 250 chip and when driving on the standard roads use the 115bhp chip which is emissions  tested.

I believe JJF remapping passes UK emission testing.
As long as enough air is going in with the fuel the emissions should be ok.  

Trust me when I say you will not use anything but the 250bhp chip on or off road  8)  when you have used it once.

JJF should be able to give you the emission figures if you don't already have them
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

For the cost of it (about £200 from bearmach) why not invest in a nanocom unit?

that way you can upload your standard 115bhp map for MoT time, then re-load the 250bhp map for play time, plus you get the added advantage of being able to keep a useful eye on your engines health.

not done it myself yet (about to buy a nanocom) but apparently it takes about 10 minutes to upload the different maps. and IIRC the nanocom unit can store 10 in its memory.

There was a thread about this on LR4x4 a while back.

Porny, who works for LR engine design team and is a whizz on Td5's reckons that the ECU's won't like being "powered up" mid flow kind of thing, and it would probably make them cough and stutter in a big way.

the concensus was that if it was possibe to run two ECU's, you'd have to piggyback each wire, and have a relay changeover system for the main power cables/fuel pump feed etc.

don't know how it would work though. both ECU's obviously would need to be programmed with the alarm codes and injector codes. i dont know if the alarm ECU needs to turn the engine ECU "on" before the engine has actually started, if not, you could "flick the switch" and possibly need to bump start the engine (as you'd be moving?) to fire it up again.

one way to find out... buy a hand full of relays, a spare ECU and give it a go!  :lol:

In theory it could be done....

But the igntion would have to be off when the change was made etc etc.... and I doubt it would be worth the hassle.  (although I might look into this in a bit more detail  :wink: )
I'm sure JF has done this before in some of his race cars, so might be worth asking him.

Personnally I'd just have two ECU's - both coded to the car, so just a case of unplugging one, and plugging the other one in when needed.  As standard it is only 3 bolts and two plugs - and it wouldn't be hard to work out a quick release mounting.

As you've mentioned having two chips...  would I correct in thinking your Defender is pre 2002??
In which case, using a Nanocom to swap between files wouldn't work.... as your ECU would be a none flashable type.

You are correct... I have a 2000 model defender.
I also have two chips so I have to take the ecu apart and interchange when needed.  If this two chip thing switch is possible..  I am interested,
Money isn't the problem....  being able to switch instantly to different tunings on the fly is very appealing for me :-)  So if you come up with something please let me know.

As mentioned....

A quick solution would be to have two ECU's.....

Have the low power chip in one, and the high power chip in the other.
If you have both ECU's coded with your injector and immobilser info, then you just need to physically swap the ECU's.

However, I will look into switchable option.

Although this thread is totally irrelevant to my V8, I am following with interest as I just think its damn cool and makes a change to most of the sledgehammer based fixes I have to use!
