clutch noise?
« on: January 01, 2008, 18:45:03 »
hi all!
:'( :'( :'( when i press the clutch, theres some grinding noise going on. the biting point is fine. could it be thrust barrings? also, when engine breaking, it really doesnt like it. it grinds and shakes. is that something to do with the clutch too? if it is, whats the best thing to do, get a whole new clutch kit? any recomendations with kit or things to stay clear of? what sort of moneys would this look like?
also, i've got to replace the rubber bushing on the rear prop, would that have anything to do with that rumbling?
cheers all!

Usually a worn thrust bearing makes a rushing noise when the pedal is up and goes quiet when you press it. Violent vibration in 1st/reverse is usually clutch imbalance (but could also be a busted gearbox mounting rubber). A worn spigot bush can aslo cause transmission vibration.
You should always replace the clutch as a 3-part kit, and if you have the LT77/R380 gearboxes, then the clutch fork too.

i had this problem on my 300tdi found out the thrust bearing was worn and it was starting to eat the pressure plate away so its advisable to buy the whole kit theres not much difference in the price and may save you money in labour time if you've got to go and get more parts
As a youth I could run up and down stairs all day now I'm older it takes me all day just to walk upstairs

If your changing the clutch fork I'd get a bit of steel welded on the back to reinforce it while it's new. It will stop it bending and stop it wearing through where the ball sits  ;)

Does the Disco pressed steel clutch fork have a plastic insert in it?

Had the clutch replaced on mine whilst the gearbox was being replaced, and the mechanic did that automatically, says he always does.
