Cambelt Woes, need help

Well she's mostly stripped down, how many points for these? :



Gant get the crank pully bolt out though, both me and rob TD90 hanging off of it and the impact wrench and it just wont shift :(

I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

Can you safely get a butane torch in there (one of the little ones from B&Q), if so what about lots heat on the nut, I used one of these little blow torches for the first time at the weekend and it was a very handy little tool.

Oh and 10 points for the rods!

You could try some of the freeze spray you can get. Can't remember what the can I have is called or where I got it... but it's kinda the reverse of the blowtorch approach... very quickly cools things down to well below freezing... You might even want to try using heat then cold...?

put a socket on the pully nut, wedge the breaker bar against the chassis and flick the starter, never had it fail to loosen yet...

Don't heat the nut, if you heat metal it expands making it tighter and harder to remove. The blow torch idea is a good one though, make sure that you heat the area all around the nut so the case expands making the nut easier to remove.

I just did my 300tdi yesterday and had to rely on the starter method. i put my longest bar on it and put it in a position that would allow it the most amount of momentum, hit the starter a few times and it eventually cracked off. Always worth a try, i struggled getting the damper off as there is no room for a puller but it eventually shifted with a bit of persuasion. i know the 200tdi are slightly different but always worth a try. best of luck

Don't use heat if the pulley is still on...., it will warp big time.

If a 200tdi, use the starter method or I have made a tool that bolts on to the pulley points and then used long bar to crack the bolt.

Don't forget, the bolt has lock thread on it and when put on, was torqued to at least a couple of hundred psi...., did have the figure, but can't find it at the moment.

Re the rods, only half a job done  :lol: :lol:

Not teaching you to suck eggs. But if you use the starter method. ont forget to remove the feed wire to the stop solenoid on the fuel pump. Just in case it decides to start.  :wink:

Tried starter, no dice.

Tried rolling the car, same. yes its stuck enough to stop the car dead in its tracks.

Tried heating, although I dont think my little butane tourch is man enough.

Only thing I can think of now is leave it to soak in penetrating oil some more, tie the bar etc down so it cant move, then maybe tow it off the drive and let it roll down the hill and dump the clutch. Not altogether happy about that approach but if it doesnt come off I need to get a new engine.

i,m not trying to make you fell worse but it took me 3 day to get the bolt out on my old 200tdi and remove the crank pully if you use heat replace the oil seal as i never but i had to do this again
hope you get it done soon

Jack her up , wedge the breaker bar against the floor then drop the jack down, works great on gearbox filler plugs as well

I've had a couple of stubborn ones so I invested in the special tool that holds the crank still - it bolts into the crank pully and has a long 'handle' that butts up against the chassis leg, you then pull against this to undo the nut, I've used it in conjunction with a rattle gun in the past and it never fails.  Diff-lock sell them.  Should fit a 200 OK.

well thats it. All avenues I have at my disposal exhausted :(

Just debating towing it down to a garage. Will pop an ad in the wanted section see if someone has the tool I can borrow. I dont want to spend quite that much on a tool I'll only ever need once.

Why couldnt they design it sensibly?

Take the starter motor off and then use a big screwdriver to jam the flywheel ring gear. You can then put a length of scaffold tube on the breaker bar to increase leverage.

Well actually it does fail as it wouldnt do it on mine either.  In the end it took about 40st worth of men hanging off a scaffold tube to crack it off.
