TD5 water in diesel warning light
« on: January 02, 2008, 18:23:57 »
My mate has a TD5 and has a warning light on his dash telling him to drain the water from the fuel filter. Not having a TD5 I assume it is the same as most diesel engines that have a seperate agglomerator. If not, where is it and can it be simply drained. Will the warning light reset having drained it or does it require an ECU reset? Cheers.....

The water sensor is on the bottom of the fuel filter (behind o/s/r wheel). Unplug the electrical multiplug, unscrew the little black plastic bit and - with a container underneath to catch the water/fuel mix - let the water run out, until you get neat diesel. Screw the black bit back on, plug in the multiplug and job done.

Some of the earlier water sensors go duff and light the light even when there's no water in the fuel, you'll need a new sensor if draining the filter doesn't work - the light doesn't need any diag/test kit to turn it off.

I had this same problem on my 2001 td5 E last August, i went through 3 filters and the same cleaning and the light still came on. You can keep on cleaning it, but the problem might persist

In the end i got the sensor changed and not had anymore problems since.
