Hi, could anyone tell me whats wrong with my auto box it's from a 1989 rrc, It all started on Friday, When you move off it would bang after about 10ft of driving then be fine it would also do this in reverse, I got to work Saturday morning went to park and then it banged again and I lost drive in 2ND 3rd and drive, All that works is 1st and reverse all oil levels are fine and the colour is cherry red, the uj needed to be replaced and was causing vibration has this got any thing to do with it? Thanks. Ben

You could try a change of oil but it sounds pretty terminal and for what they cost S/H it may be better to fit one you know works.
If you've lost everything except 1st and reverse I think it's a brake or clutch pack inside that's gone but without a mnual to hand I can't say.

Another thing to check has the viscous seized in the transfer box.
Seems odd UJ gone then terminal gearbox, jack a front wheel up and see if you can move it at all, if the viscous is ok you should be able to turn the wheel with some force needed.
Daughters viscous unit seized took out front cv (turned the half shaft in the cv !) and ruined the front uj as the axle is trying to drive the gearbox not otherway round ! If these bits don't go then the next weakest bit will go like the gearbox internals, I have another RR with goosed viscous that has taken the transfer gear out in the box awaiting repair !
If you need it I have an auto box with an old style LT230 transfer on it believed all good and cheap ?

sorry forgot to put down that it doesn't have a viscous it's been replaced with a locking diff, will that make it easier to sort out?

Sounds like you need a new gearbox I've got a good 4 speed auto both from a 1989 Rangie yours for £150 collect Basingstoke or I can put it on a pallet for your courier to collect.
