Tax doesn't have to be taxing......
« on: January 31, 2005, 00:14:30 »
.....but it is, and we prefer it that way!

I've pretty much wasted this weekend trying to enter the details of my tax return via the internet, exept for the oportunity to chat with some of you that's all I've done and I'm p****d off to say the least.
Now I'll be joining all the other hoards sending it off last minute by post, I'll have to send it recorded delivery to make sure it gets there the same week too!

Would you believe, that with 24 hours to go they have pulled the site now for maintenance?
And we let these people run the country.

:-)  Doesn't surprise me.

According to the guy who does my accounts, now is the best time to submit your self assesment, especially if you think they owe you money..    they are sooooo busy in the tax office at this time, that they are much less likely to query it :-)

Am I being overly cynical or is the new "policy" that they've made the tax rules so complicated that they no longer have time to work it out and want you to do it, principly so they can charge you money when you invariably get it wrong.

I wonder if you can charge them for your time, since you're effectively doing their job for them...  couple of hundred an hour I reckon :)

When I did mine I got soo messed up and confused I ended up phoning their 'panic' line

( I am actually form phobic, even hate the stuff we get from the kids school, let HWMBO do all that)

They talked me through it and it was done hasle free in about 15 mins.

It's a service they provide for free, so them do all the hard stuff, I take the person's name who talks me through it, so if they're are any problems they are the ones who have messed up.

Sorted

What gets me annoyed is they have several ways of describing something that you or I would consider all the same, take payouts from dividends for example.  On that point, do people who are PAYE have to declare these, NO.

Anyway. I was up till 2.00 am trying to get back online to finish the form, it kept dumping me out or saying PAGE NOT AVAILABLE, you know the one.  I finally got done at lunchtime, just now in fact.  I ended up having to delete the whole form and start from scratch, it's ridiculous.

Now I'm not exactly thick but if I'm struggling with this form then who knows how some folks have got on.

Your a brave man to try to do it online

As a new business when I was in Nottingham, a man from the Tax office came to the house and talked me through the form.

Even he had problems  'translating into English' the form, and he reckoned it was harder to understand since they had simplyfied it

That was 4 years ago IIRC they have changed it since.

TBH I look at the form and go blank. Yes Im severly dyslexic, and logic tells me Im not uninteligent, but the way it's worded and layed out defies all logic to me.

After seeing the Tax man struggle with what bits I needed to fill in etc, at least I know it's not just me - and thank god for the phone help line!

Possibly, but be careful.  If it turns out that you owe them money when they do get around to checking it you *will* be liable for surcharges and interest, backdated, on anything that's owed.

According to Working Lunch today, the tax people have said that they are giving a 2 week amnesty for anyone who tried to log on and do their return before the deadline, but couldn't due to web probs submit their details.

phew that was a long sentence!

Dunno if this applies to anyone, could be useful info though

Oh no    .

I have recently heard of someone trying to get insurance against acts of God and HMCE action. As I explained to him early one morning. It is one and the same thing
