well the number 2 recon v8 has turned up at mates garage today, hope this one lasts more than 2 months.
its not the same as the last one though, its apparently a late 3.9serpentine type, heard of but not sure on the difference, i know there aint much.
hopefully my man will have the time to get it back in this week but he has a geezer away for 2 days so might be pushing it a bit.
will let all know when its in and purring away again!

AFAIK the serpentine engine had a few small differneces, mostly at the front end.  The differences are in the front cover mainly, the oil pump was crank driven, the water pump moved to the centre, that kind of stuff.

I thiknk there was a camshaft locating plate rather than it running on the inside of the front cover :-k or something like that.

But they are interchangeable with earlier types ie a serpentin long engine will still build up into a pre-serpentine. That's what my 4.6 is.

WELL OUR GARAGE HAS HAD A MAN ON HER ALL DAY And shes back home and purring like a kitten, anyone in lincolnshire with landrover problems should see my mate at  discovery developments in pinchbeck, hes as good as you can get.
as for the engine, it sounds mint as it should and drives very smooth, i hope i have no problems with this one, as the engine supplier has used all his nine lives.
im actually after 2 months of nigly little things here and there, plus a big landrover problem, got a smile on my face.

THAT OR YOUR HEAD SMASHED IN, shouldnt have to lean on people to get things done. its a good job the fitting garage is a good mate and knows me well, or it could have been a different outcome, as he did the explaining that he had not very long to sort it and underwarranty or hed be getting a visit, and then i would have to explain the error of his ways.

here we go again!   its started tapping like mad.
start up from cold, perfect just burbles along then as it warms up it taps like hell
i hope its justa tappet of something needs adjusting, cuz i aint having it pulled out again.

They have hydraulic lifters. a rocker could have come loose, take the rocker covers off and give everything a feel, should be a slight bit of play when the valve is fully closed. fire it up and check everythings working and no stuck valves etc.

Acording to RPI a tapping follower is a sign of a worn camshaft, fitting new followers won't help (I've done this myself and it doesn't).  One of the first signs of camshaft wear is bad fuel economy.

That said RPI have stopped using **itpart followers because so many have been returned :-.

Otherwise as sadi, sticky/bent valve or rocker.

Big screwdriver/ear might tell you which side is tapping, or if it's coming from the middle.

 oil pressure problem ??   Would be higher when cold, then as it warms up it would drop,- causing the tappets to rattle

  Not trying to doom and gloom :(  just throwing ideas in  :-k

  I know the oil pressure relief valves can stick, ( mark evans one did on a 4x4 is born )

it sound like just a t,t,t,t,t,t,t,t,t,t, and probably just 1 of whatever it is as it isnt clattery, just a single t,t,t,t,t,t.
bearing in mind this is a new engine oil pressure should be good, but after saying that so should be whats tapping.
its just really annoying as it is running as sweet as a nut, as good as a v8 could ever run, but as said, after about a miniute it starts, and it sounds like and old dog just due to a loud tap.

I'd suspect that the cam was not in fact new but original to the engine 9or 'an' engine) and it's taken about a day to go through the pre-lube and any oil they used to 'prime' the lifters during the rebuild, it could have been thicker oil or more pre-lube.

An alternative is a blockage in the oilways supplying the lifters.

If you get as far as looking at the top of the camshaft (Inlet manifoild off) then cranks the engine and watch the lifters.  If any of them are NOT spinning slowly then the camshaft is worn out.  Check they all have oil around them and on both ends of the pushrod, but basicaly this is how it starts.

you did run it at 2k rpm for 20 mins when you fired it up to run the cam in yeah?

Are you sure it's not just something as simple as a loose manifold/downpipe? V8's are notorious for undoing them ;-) when engine is cold - check all manifold to head bolts and also downpipe nuts ;-)

Oh and ... you haven't run it over 3000rpm have you? <eeeeek>

no not been over 3000rpm yet, but to be honest, also dont believe in a lot of that, ive had several new v8's in the past and never run them in and never had a problem.
seeing as we paid for a cam kit origionaly, im assuming this has a new cam.
ive just given her a bit of a run, down the backroads overto the a1 and a few miles on there, then home, done about 80miles i should think, it drives spot on, sounds great, to be honest everything is working brilliant, and when i got back the tapping isnt as bad, but is still there.
reckon im just gonna leave it, and when its done 1000miles in a few weeks, it can be serviced and hopefully adjusted up, as dads had a listen and said summit needs shiming, but it isnt out serious, cannot remember what he said now.rod or something.

If the heads have been skimmed, the valve seats re cut or something like that  then the rocker posts can need shimming to get the correct preload back into the hydraulic lifters.

ONE OF MY MANS LADS HAVE HAD A LISTEN THIS MORNING AND HE RECKONS A HYDRAULIC LIFTERS SHOT, AND YES THEY ARE ALL NEW, AS WAS THE CAM AND EVERYTHING ELSE.
HE DIDNT KNOW WHOS LIFTERS THE BUILDERS USE BUT I BET ITS SHI, I MEAN BRITPART RUBBISH.

Only thing you can do is look.  If there is no obvious signs of damage then I doubt anything will have happened and TBH a 'loose' follower would have allowed more oil into the wedge, not less.

The only issue I would have is if the dodgy follower was not spinning, I'd expect it to spin even will almost no pressure on it :-k
