THATS EXACTLY LIKE MINE DID JUST before the cracked block let go! it was a 2 month old recon unit ran sweet as a nut, but kept getting a bit hot, but not overheat, no oil in water etc etc etc, then driving along it just started pouring smoke out the back when it finally let go.
no matter what you do do NOT go to v8 developments in lincolnshireto sort it out.

How high does it go?  is it of the scale?

If not then re-fit your old temp sender and put a new thermostat in it.  I bought a S/H engine and found that my tempt guage didn't read as before, but it's still going 2 years later.

You've got to do all the simple stuff before worrying that it could be serious.
