Another MOT Question !!!
« on: February 16, 2008, 20:41:01 »
My 90 is tested till the end of October but I hate winter MOT's as I have to work outside if anything needs fixing. So I plan to take it in at the end of May so in the future I will have light nights and hopefully warmer weather if owt needs fixing.

Now here comes the silly question, if it fails the May MOT does that cancel out the one that runs until the end of October, in other words will it show up as a car without an MOT on the database?.

i would say no (unless they have to impound it). but if not and you know your tester just give him £20 to 'check it over' and tell you if awts wrong. then you can fix whatever is wrong and take it back with the confidence it will pass.

My understanding is that an MOT is just a certificate to show that at a given point in time the vehicle meets certain roadworthiness standards.

If stopped by the police, and if they wanted to, they could test it again and if it were to fail you could be prosecuted.

So I would imagine that if it were to fail then the existing MOT would be invalid

Just my view :D

Fair point Big Watty

However my test station has told me the existing test will still be valid up until it expires...

Best way is a pre test by the sounds of it...

as  said, just have a pre test check, no paperwork then, as i could see in the event off an accident or something, it looks like an ace get out clause for insurance.

Very good question; with the old system there was no problem.

Yes you will still have a Valid MOT, you can tax the vehicle etc. BUT:

It is illegal to drive a vehicle with a fault on it, even if it passed yesterday. If it failed a test today and you got stopped tomorrow the database will demonstrate you clearly know about the fault so you have lost the best defence you might have had.

yes you can drive a vehicle until it runs out and you can retest it anytime but if it passes it then has a new "birthday" as we call it, and if it fails and you cant get it fixed i.e. waiting for parts, you can drive it on the road aslong as the Failure is not a "Deemed Dangerous" or "This Vehicle Is not Fit for the Road" Failure

A new MOT test will automatically make the old test void. Best to get a pre MOT test done, then if it fails you can fix the faults before getting a MOT properly.
The database will show your MOT status from the last test, that's what the police and DVLA go off.

yes it shows as a failure but it also shows as having a Current MOT (i have done this numerous times as i have vehicles that i know will fail)

When buying cars i have friends that take them for MOT even if it has loads left, its a cheap way to find out how good a car is and it avoids them surprises at the test station when the mot runs out after you bought it.

Actually its a good idea, although a lot if garages will do a pre mot inspection, or you can specify a full inspection, and it would probably be cheaper than putting it through the system, the mot  is not a guarantee that the vehicle is fully road worthy, there are things that are not in the test that would soon show up when driving, a thorough inspection is the only way to show these problems, a quick one which has been mentioned on here, especially with discos is the heater motor packing up, it wont show on an mot but can be an expensive thing to get sorted at a garage

Another one is a cv joint on the way out, unless the gaiter is split it wont show up on an mot, also oil & coolant leaks
