The time has come

well i find myself in the situation where i must park up the disco for a bit :'( as the ever rising fuel prices mean that its just not viable for me to keep chucking fuel in to let SWMBO run round the town in it, so much to her disgust i have obtained a free vw polo..in gold  for her to use on the school run and to pop in and out of town during the week
Having just put diesel in down the road at £1.12ppl  it makes more sense to use something that will give me 40+miles to the gallon at least for the time being
anyone else contemplating this? I really dont want to stop using the landy and i,m not getting rid of it but fuel prices are just getting silly now and more gutting is a customer at work has just come back from venezuala where he was filling the hire car for £0.03ppl  yes you did read right 3p a litre for petrol

At the present moment in time, I'm giving serious consideration to going back to working on the streets, and before anybody puts a smuty comment, I mean going back on patrol. The money is better due to overtime, although it would mean night shifts again and dealing with, how can I put this, the more unintelligent members of the gene pool. A bit like shooting fish in a barrel. The nearest nick to me is 3 miles away, easily done on a pushbike, and the Disco could come out on high days and holidays.
I have to say, I feel very bitter about how we seem to be being held to ransom, but freedom of choice I suppose. We don't have to have big cars, but we also don't have to put up with this dictatorial bunch of schemers that are currently in power!

my girlfriend has the family car, a bora 2.0 litre sport, and ive got my disco as a toy and my work van a 2.5 transit, the cost of running all these is very high, i cant wait for the next petrol strike, it always seems to go under 95p then for a short time anyway. i cant belive the prices we have to pay, soon it will only be the rich who can afford to have cars,

I'm with your reasoning there, fortunately I don't need mine for work but the prices are crazy
What I've done is gone down the SVO route at a 50/50 mix, which saves a chunk, and seriously looking at near 100% SVO. I'm figuring on one of the Vow2 heaters which will allow me 90 to 95% oil so saving me about £45 every fill up!! no brainer in my book!

well we run the disco on 100% bio (89ppl) and hubby will be using his suzuki 400 for work from tomorrow - he has also applied for a position in Telford so if that comes off then we will be looking for a small diesel - summat like a 106 d or metro d ..or maybe even a - MOPED
our government complains that the price od crude has gone up - yet the Yanks are still paying about £1.50 a gallon...makes interesting reading when you go on a yank 4x4 site - and they complain about paying $3 a gallon...then someone from the UK pipes up and says that we are paying close on $10 ..

To save moneyi have taken two steps
1. Running the disco on biodiesel (95.9p ltr) which is helping but is still a pain in the a*** due to driving 30miles a day just getting to work
2. i have just brought a 1.6 astra petrol which will be my daily driver
This way i wont have to get rid of the disco and also i can now start modifiying it again and still have a car to get to work in ;)

well since the earlier post i,ve spent most of the day obtaining quotes for insurance
and only just managed to find one actually lower than the value of the car :? car,s value is only£150 yes yes i know that makes it sound like a scrapper but it belonged to a little old lady who has now gone senile and cant remember what a car is let alone drive one but its not worth anything.
lowest quote for me so far is £122

56p a litre for pura oil, in this cold weather 25 litres of oil to 10 litres of diesel and a couple of litres of petrol, no issues, 90% oil in the summer
2 years and not a single problem
In fact motoring is now so cheap Ive just shelled out £600 for a full VWtd conversion for my good ladys vitara cos in 6 months I will have recouped the outlay
Give me a Landy 200TDI anyday cant get much better effectively getting well over 40mpg buying it, if I get it free from and used then its almost [!Expletive Deleted!] all... 30p a litre all in

The local council fuels my LPG V8, well, indirectly anyway.
SWMBO works for them and gets paid over 44p per mile plus travelling time to transport children in her 1985 Fiat Panda on Business Insurance Fully Comp (£170+), the car does 55+ mpg average, and is unusually rust free at just 21,000 genuine miles.
Just don't tell the missus!

yes petrol prices are rising but the oil prices are too... we have gone from buying our cooking oil in @ 11.50 for the 20ltr box to now nearly 15. with most of that hike in the last 6 months.
Oil companies are starting to realise that people are using there products for fuel and not just cooking. yes it still saves you a small amount but its becoming very daft. ESp when they say peoples borrowinging are at an all time high... not suprising when you gotta get a loan out just to get to work for the month so you can attempt to pay it back @ some point!

I thought about it very serioulsy too, the samll amount we use each car makes it a joke to have to tax them.. Road tax should be abolished anyway, the amount the Gov't rakes in in fuel duty is a disgrace, if they did away with road tax it wouldn't punish people for owning 2 cars and driving the most appropriate one.

i was finding it very hard to find the money to pay for fuel as im only a student and i have to save up for the landy rally so i get used cooking oil and stick it through my secret filter that works out at about 2p per litre and mix it 50/50 just hoping the fuel pump doesnt give up
heres a hint for people thinking of doing the same, cooking oil from indian restuarants is much easier to filter than chip shops and it smells better from the exaust  ;)
cheers kieran

I too have thought about giving up the disco but I have now done the veg oil conversion and run it on 100% new rapeseed from tesco. It makes it alot cheaper to run.
the daily runner the rover 620 is the same price as the disco to run on fuel now the conversion is done but is alot better on long journeys. I have had to fork out £800 recently for the mot and exhaust. The biggest bill in 9 years but it is things that needed to be done.
Lady at work has a ford fusion diesel and her road tax is £30 a year.
If only I could afford one! Anyone got enough money to lend me minus £200 I will get for the rover to buy one? It is a viscious circle. Not enough money to buy a cheap low emmisions car so buy something older and have to pay more tax and fuel to run it.
As someone else said, it will only be the rich who have cars soon.
