2008 Macmillan 4x4 Challenge - Result
« on: March 10, 2008, 22:20:47 »
Well, Big Rich and I have had a cracking weekend and despite a couple of minor issues (like the starter not working since Saturday morning) we managed to finish this years event.

And what an event it was.  We started at Britpart in Shropshire and travelled up through Wales on some really obscure roads to get to Bala where we did the off road course in the dark.  From there to Holyhead and a ferry to Dublin.  If we thought the roads in Wales were a bit out of the way then those in Eire were just from another planet.  We made our way up through Eire and crossed the border somewhere not far from Omagh where we stopped in at Todds Leap, an off road centre.  After negotiating another course in the dark it was off to Belfast to catch the ferry to Stranraer and then on to Lockerbie for the night.  Final day was in the Borders before heading back to Warrington, the finish and a well deserved beer.

The long and short of it is, that despite going the wrong way round a big bit of the route in Wales, and not being able to get going without being push started, we finished in overall first place.

Big thanks to Rich not only for breaking the car and keeping me up at night with his snoring, but also for his skills as navigator and driver throughout the weekend.  We had a laugh and got a well desrved trophy.

Thanks also to all the Mac competitors without whom we would never have got going at each checkpoint.  It really does need more than one person to bump start a Td5, whatever Rich might say!!

We've raised a fair bit of cash, and the website (www.justgiving.com/mac4x4team27) will be staying open for another couple of weeks just in case anybody feels inspired to add a bit to the pot  ;)

Cheers

congratulations to the two of you, it was worth Rich losing a bit of weight, even if it meant he couldn't push your motor on his own  now

You mean this nutter . . . ?  We hooked up with them for the long drive back to Runcorn and then home.  Know Rob and Liz from last year.  Shame Liz couldn't make it, but having spoken to her over the weekend she's promised to be back!!

I didnt really get a chance to speak to any mud clubbers!  We came about 4 from the bottom I think!  We completely skipped half of 2 sections due to us managing to get a little lost (ie 25 miles+ off course)!  We also got 0 point for one section that my navigator didnt write our team number on.  By the last day he could read a map and were were doing ok!  :D  What a laugh though, great fun.  I am in for next year and aiming to be in the top 40 :D:D

We were the 110 petrol that developed the exhaust manifold blow and lack of power!  Apollogies to anyone I woke up by doing a lap of the carpark in lockerbie at gone 3am :D

Someone on the mac forum described the feeling as "mac lag" - I know exaclty what they mean!  I am still screwed now!

   We of team 47 had a 2 1/4 N/A 90, it was fine on the flat if a little sluggish but as soon as it got to a hill it all but stopped   Still we were lucky enough to make it to the finish line completeing all stages and only a broken speedo cable to show for it! The 24 year old 90 did us proud, as for the Mac Lag   Yes im still suffering, as i sit here typing this post my eyes are trying to close     Roll on next years Mac     ;) ;)

Cheers

The only problem I think with doing it in such an underpowered motor is the extra sleep time you lose!  We were almost last to both sleep breaks, getting less than 3 hours each night!  I can feel a 200tdi coming on!  I also need to work on the 110 bed for next year...

I am in though, thats for sure.

We got nil points as well for the Britpart questionairre as we didn't hand it in.  Found it yesterday while tidying up from the weekend

Oh well, the extra 10 points wouldn't have made a difference anyway  ;)

Im hoping to do it in my modded 2.8TDI next year, so it could be very interesting! And with the 2 1/4 N/A 90, trust me we didnt get much more sleep than you! Think i got half our or so on the ferry back but woke up feeling like crap

oh well, all in a good cause
