Yesterday when on motorway temp gauge shot up to just below red, slowed down a little and it dropped back down, drviving home it kept going up and then back down at strange times, been out today and gauge has seemed to be fine for 70 miles sat in normal position but now my heater isnt working .any ideas ? is this the same prob or two coincidental problems

Silly question, but do you have water in it..?...It may be the water pump or fan belt snapped causing it to get hot..Have you checked all this...Also is the rad clogged with mud..?

IIRC even with thermostat stuck shut the heater should still work. personally i would try bleeding it. might be an airlock.

Had a similar problem last year with my Disco 300TDI, it turned out to be a minute hole in the head gasket which caused the heater to run hot and cold.
